Post-Bluetooth pairing, internal mic quits

Equipment: X200s, XP Pro SP3.  All software is up to date.

1. At start, the internal mic and spearks works fine.

2. I paired and connected an LG HBM-770 Bluetooth headset.  The laptop finds and connects the headset, and I choose the "use with Skype" option.  Skype and the headset work fine together.

3. I turn off (and therefore disconnect) the headset.  Now, neither Skype nor any other program reacts to my internal mic.  Even weirder - sometimes, when I speak (not on Skype), the laptop repeats back everything I say.  So, the mic 'functions' in the sense that it can receive sound waves.

I've tried:

a) checking Windows audio settings - set mic to not muted, and to full 'volume'.

b) turning off Skype completely.

c) turning off Bluetooth.

d) trying different settings in the Conexand control panel audio settings applet.

e) trying different settings in Skype audio options.

e) doing all the above after restarting Windows.

None of it works.  The internal mic is effectively dead.  Except when every now when I get the echo of whatever I'm saying (usually "why doesn't this $&@ work?!)".  I haven't figured out what conditions cause that.

Note: I had the same internal mic death question once before.  Completely re-installing XP did seem to cure it, but I'm not anxious to do that again.  Any suggestions?

PS LG wash their hands of the problem
