X100e screen brightness increasing by itself!

My X100e has started doing something very odd.... now and then it will randomly increase the screen brightness by one increment (you see the OSD come up and show the increase also) as though I've just pressed FN + Home once.    Has this happened to anyone else?  Any cause or resolution?

Thanks!

Re: X100e screen brightness increasing by itself!

Hi aholland73,

I think you probably have LED backlight screen, it's sort of a sensor that adjusts to lighting conditions surrounding you, it will dim in dark and brighten itself in good lighting environment. I know this because my mac does the same.

I don't know how you can adjust it on thinkpads since I've yet to own one with such a screen, hopefully someone else with knowledge of this option can chime in.

Hope this helps.

I think you mean an ambient light sensor (ALS)? Nope, there is no obvious sign of an ALS on the netbook and also that would imply it would only change when lighting conditions change, which is not the case. In a room with only electric lighting it will randomly and occasionally increase the screen brightness by 1 step each time. It never decreases the brightness even if I increase the lighting in the room. So no, not ALS then!

I'm starting to wonder if somehow something is wrong that is causing it to think that Fn + Home has been pressed, i.e. a keyboard scanning fault?

I would really welcome some input from someone from Lenovo on this... before I go through  the hassle and expense of a support phone call!

Thanks for trying though! :smileyhappy:

Sorry, yes I meant ALS.

Does this happen regardless of whether you're plugged in or using your system on battery? I would suggest making a custom power scheme in lenovo Power Manager, and thereafter test the system for this problem.

Also, try updating your BIOS, video and hotkey drivers to latest version:- http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/MIGR-74463.html

You're welcome! :smileyhappy:

Re: X100e screen brightness increasing by itself!

Am already running latest BIOS, video and hotkey drivers. it happens on mains or battery power. I've just created a custom profile with pretty much the same settings as the "power source optimised" one i was using and sure enough a few minutes after applying it, it's done it again, screen brightness gone up from 9 to 10! Arrrrggghhhh this is annoying me so much now!

Re: X100e screen brightness increasing by itself!

Right, after removing and reinstalling anything Lenovo provided, checking using several tools to see what exactly was being loaded at startup by way of background processes, I still could not find a cause for this.

So naturally, it's now fixed - because I wiped the hard disk and reinstalled Windows 7 again!

Would still love to know what caused it though, but guess I'll never know!

Computers occasionally develop weird issues, but thanks for reporting back the solution!

Re: X100e screen brightness increasing by itself!

Same thing is happening to me now.

I can't believe how many problems this X100E has. (Chech my "X100E too hot, shuts down" thread). Also, I tried creating recovery disks and I get a message saying "Unable to find files for recovery media).

Anyway, the brightness seems to increase by one increment and by itself. I just verified this by setting my default brightness in this power plan to 13 and after a few minutes, it changed by itself to 14. If I set it to 15 it will try to change but since it's already at its maximum level, the brightness OSD just pops up with a 15 at random times, very annoying.

This behavior started yesterday. Two days ago I installed the following updates (in hopes of resolving the heating issue):

Lenovo System Interface Driver 1.05

On Screen Display 6.20.00

Thinkpad FullScreen Magnifier 2.20

Thinkpad Power Manager 3.31

By the way, this last version of On Screen Display solved the widely known Cap Locks issue, but it seems it created new problems.
