X220 SDD Upgrade options

What would you guys recommend to do? I have heard that you can purchase 2.5" SDD drives and take off the enclosure and still make them fit.

Re: X220 SDD Upgrade options

1. Look at x220's Hardware Maintenance Manual
2. Find out some threads here. For example, this one:

Do it well, worse becomes itself

Re: X220 SDD Upgrade options

I've just bought Crucial M4 256GB.

It's 9.5mm thick originally.

A little modification makes it perfectly 7mm, fit with rubber rings also.

Re: X220 SDD Upgrade options

Any 7mm thick SSD would work.

However you might want to avoid the Crucial M4, especially the 256GB and the 512GB versions, as they tend to have a higher failure rate.

I would recommend the Intel 520 series, 330 series, and the Samsung 830 series. Plextor M3P might work as well. Stay away from SandForce based models other than the ones from Intel.

Re: X220 SDD Upgrade options

I am running an Intel 520 series 180GB model, which is 7mm thick when you remove the spacer.

Works great and extremely fast!

Re: X220 SDD Upgrade options

I am going with the 256 GB Samsung 830 MZ! Should be a beast.
