Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

[ Edited ]

I have an 80 GB MSATA SSD.

Soap,

Please also note that your testing does not stress the GPU to its limits, Soap, as you are only seeing a clock rate of 900 MHz.  The clock rate which is desired (the maximum) is 1300 MHz--and as soon as the system hits that value, provided all of the aforementioned conditions have been met, the throttling occurs.

Mellospace,

Playing Civ 5 with either the 90W adapter or no adapter attached produces no such throttling.  However, playing with the 90W UltraSlim makes the touchpad completely unusable due to related power issues with this notebook which also need to be corrected (see my other thread about this).

Ok thanks. Yeah, I was just reading your other thread about the touchpad problem and saw that many people are having the same issues. Thanks for your updates on this and for the great description of the problem on the page you linked on the owners thread. Also saw the many issues people are having with the laptop in th forums (90W adapter touchpad, brightness keys, 50hz, fan noise). Seems like too many issues.

At the moment, I am desperately waiting to get my hands on my X220 to perform all the testing myself. Hopefully on Monday I'll be able to do it. I'm still thinking about keeping the X220 with the i7 and see if Lenovo can come up with some solutions about these problems soon, the throttling issue especially. If not, I can always decide to keep the one with the i5 instead since I'll have both at hand and will be able to return the one I choose to.

Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

I have a Crucial C300 128GB SSD and I have successfully reproduced this issue, however not consistently. Of the 5 times I've tried, I've gotten it to perma-throttle 3 times. The other 2 times it ran both CPU burn and GPU burn for an hour without problems. All times were with AC plugged in on maximum performance.

Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

I have the 320 GB 7200 RPM hard drive, and I have the thottling issue as well.  Using bios 1.12, I've tested it with both the 4-cell and 9-cell while running on AC power.

The only programs I have running during the test are HWiNFO32 and OCCT, using the "GPU : OCCT" stress test I will see throttling after approximately 1-5 minutes.

Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

Hey plage,

It's probably terribly obvious, but the first minute of the OCCT test is an idle system monitor; the testing doesn't actually begin until the 1 minute mark.

I am sure you already realize this, but I just wanted to point it out to everyone involved here.

Also, if anyone sees anything they think should be added to that DigitalChumps page I posted on the problem, please let me know.  I will also be happy to post updates from Lenovo engineers on the problem as we work toward a resolution.

Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

Hello everyone,

Thank you all for the information that you provided.  I have seen results that are similar to yours and we are investigating this.

Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

Soap,

Thanks again for your frequent and clear communication.

Please also don't forget to check on this seemingly-related problem with the 90W UltraSlim adapter and the touchpad pointer malfunctioning.  I don't believe it has anything to do with drivers as, again, the behavior subsides when the CPU/GPU is stressed, which is bizarre and quite unsettling.  :-)

Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

It has been 2-3 days since the problem has been forwarded to engineers. I am curious how long does it take for Lenovo engineers to take a look at this kind of problem and report back with yea we will fix the problem or nay we just want your money..

Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

Well, one of them has just confirmed today that he has been able to reproduce the problem. Be patient geez...

Re: X220 cpu throttling problem

This problem is not isolated to Lenovo and may be quite difficult to find the source.

Im glad I have a ton of 90W power bricks lying around from former thinkpads.
