Same problem. Seems Lenovo's Poweer Manager is useful of desling with this fan noise. It just didn't work out. Maybe we need an updated BIOS.

I received my X220 with i7 processor today and already I am seeing the problem with the fan noise.

It is immensely loud, what you might expect after a while of doing something really processor-intensive like transcoding video or compiling something big. It is always like this, even while idling, no matter how long I leave it alone for. It can be clearly heard anywhere in the room.

I am posting to let the engineers know that my machine has bios version 1.12 installed, according to ThinkVantange Toolbox. The full version seems to be 8DET42WW (1.12).

where did you get the BIOS 1.12 from? preinstalled?

For those having problems with fan noise, try this. First, make sure you have lenovo power manager installed, version 3.52. Select advanced mode. Select "Power source optimized" profile. Select "System settings". Select "system performance" under the battery column. MAKE SURE "BALANCED" IS SET, NOT "LOW". This is crucial! Select "optimize fan control to:" Balance all parameters.

Select apply. Once I did this, two things happened. First, fan speed is now on very low. Two, I have MORE battery life than if I would have set the system performance to Low.

Please pass this on to the engineers!!!

changed nothing for me. still at 3500 rpm. let control tpfc the fan again

what helps is 'dynamic noise reduction', helps something, but noise still is very ennoying

Yeah, sorry guys, about 5 minutes after i wrote that post, the fan speed came back.  However, it did appear to increase my battery life.

I've fleshed BIOS from 1.04 to 1.11 and Turbo Bust just stopped working. The maximum CPU frequency under load now is only 2.7GHz instead of 3.2GHz (i7-2620M). Is there any way to rollback the bios or flash backup?
