Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

Updated my X220 with the new BIOS 1.21.

Pulsing sound seems definitely gone(so far).

However the whining is still there and my fan is running at a high speed constantly when using maximum performance setting.

At what CPU temp? If it's high, you might need replacement of the thermal grease between the CPU and fan, for which you can contact Warranty Support if you don't want to do it yourself.

Hope that helps,
John

Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

Good to hear that the BIOS seems to be working. Has anyone managed to update without Windows or optical drive?

Thanks, M

  1. Mount the BIOS ISO in an image drive.
  2. Copy everything from the image drive to FAT32 formatted flash media (pen drive, SDHC card).
  3. Boot from the flash media.
Hope that helps,
John

Yeah, it seem to be gone (5 minutes testing). There is no pulsing and no beat on the keyboard anymore.

Big thanks for the great work!

Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

John,

mountig the ISO using

sudo mount -o loop

I do not get any content in the directory. Does the ISO have a special file system?

Thanks,

Martin

Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

@docmart

Yes, it uses so-called "Harddisk Emulation", so extraction and/or mounting is not as trivial as with standard ISOs. However I could successfully update (and finally fix - yay!) my x220 by following these steps:

1. Enter USB flash drive.

2. Get grub4dos and install it on the flash drive:

wget http://download.gna.org/grub4dos/grub4dos-0.4.4.zip
unzip grub4dos-0.4.4.zip
cd grub4dos-0.4.4
./bootlace.com /dev/<USB_DEVICE> # determine with "mount" or "sudo fdisk -l"

3. Get the current firmware (1.21) and put it on the flash drive:

wget http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc/pccbbs/mobiles/8duj10uc.iso
cp 8duj10uc.iso <USB_MOUNTPOINT> # e.g.: /media/USB
vim <USB_MOUNTPOINT>/menu.lst

4. At the bottom of menu.lst, add a new entry:

title Lenovo X220: Update to BIOS 1.21
root (hd0,0)
map /8duj10uc.iso (0xff) || map --mem /8duj10uc.iso (0xff)
map --hook
root (0xff)
configfile /grub4dos.lst || chainloader (0xff)

5. Save & close menu.lst.

6. Restart, then boot from USB (you may need to press F12 to enter the boot menu).

7. Select "Lenovo X220: Update to BIOS 1.21" and follow instructions.

:smileyhappy:

Re: X220 - fan constantly on / revving up and down

Yeah, improvement here too, but the pitch sound is higher then it was on my X300. But it's fine with me.

My fan run at 3100rpm @ 53C on light work.
