bchurchwell, do you have any suggestion for easy, small memory footprint temperature monitor for both linux and windows?

Windows: HWiNFO/32/64 (sensor only mode)

Thanks John,
I love hwinfo (I used that to determine if my x220 cpu was running accurately) but I am looking for something that can run in the toolbar with temperature display, or scrolling through vital stats. I wish HW had that option.

I have pretty good hearing (its been tested by the British Army with all kinds of machinary). Naturally when I got my x220 the fan noise made me weep. Not so mutch the high pitch noise but the extent that the laptop cools itself.
My x220 idles @ 44C, if I click on a few websites (maybe open some youtube videos) and the fans kick in (annoyingly) and then go straight back down again. Lenovo seem to think the CPU should be kept at ~45C constantly.
I have used TPFanControl to basiically stay at 2000rpm for anything below 70C. It is set to update every 2 seconds for quicker responce and .
Level=40 1
Level=70 1
Level=75 2
Level=80 3
Level=85 5
Level=90 7
Level=95 64
On any given task throught the day the CPU sometimes goes upto and hovers around 70C, rarley goes above and spends most of its time idelling sub 50C. This configuration basically keeps a constant 2000rpm fan speed but comes in pretty quick and harder and harder to protect the CPU at temps above 70C.
I believe this is how it should be set up. This way doing day-to-day tasks means you would never hear the X220 (since 2k rpm is pretty silent). Only when you using the CPU for long+intensice tasks would the higher RPM speeds kick in.
Does anyone concure or would everyone say that I am just frying my laptop?

Maximum junction temperature for X220 processors is 100°C.
Intel recommends going to max fan at 10°C less, or 90°C.
In addition, you should allow 5°C for possible sensor error.
Thus you should go to maximum fan at 85°C, and staying below 80°C should be fine.
The processor will automatically protect itself if an unsafe temperature occurs.

Just installed the latest BIOS 1.24 (BIOS says 1.24, website says 1.23 for some reason). No improvement ![]()
