X220 i7 8Gb very slow WEI for Processor

[ Edited ]

Hi Guys

I have searched and read loads of stuff about throttling and the difference between 90W and 65W power supplies all having an effect on the above subject.

However, none of the fixes seem to work. Lots of you report a WEI of 7.1 whereas I can only get 3.4 with the battery in before anyone asks that question!

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

My scores are as follows:-

Processor 3.4

Memory 5.6

Graphics 5.9

Gaming Graphics 6.3

Primary Hard Disk 7.9

My specs are as follows:-

Lenovo X220

i7 2620M @ 2.7Ghz

8GB Crucial Ram

256GB C300 SSD

Windows 7 Professional 64

BIOS 1.19

Maximum performance selected in Advanced

Turbo boost turned on in basic mode

Cheers all

Re: X220 i7 8Gb very slow WEI for Processor

That's pretty screwy. Mine is 7.1 like most others.

Have you checked your tassk manager process list to make sure nothing is chewing up cpu cycles before you start the WEI benchmark?

Download hwinfo64 and see what the processor speed is during the testing...

I downloaded that program and during the CPU Performance it was stuck on 800 Mhz!

Re: X220 i7 8Gb very slow WEI for Processor

The performance you record is way out of line.  Running on both the 65w and 90w power bricks I get

Processor 7.1

Memory 7.5

Graphics 5.8

Gaming Graphics 6.2

Primary Hard Disk 7.5

I run multi-core and Intel support for virtualization.  My 4286-CTO configuration is:X220 i7-2620M, 12.5" basic, Intel 310 msata (primary),  Samsung 256 FED SSD 6GB RAM, Lenovo B/G/N WiFi, no BT, Win7 64 SP1

It's as though your X220 is stuck in throttled state (exactly the same 800 Mhz documented in the throttling thread). A possible cause might be a malfunctioning temperature sensor.

Re: X220 i7 8Gb very slow WEI for Processor

Using Hwinfo64 it appears to show the cpu at 3.4 Ghz until the WEI assessment starts then it drops right back. Once the WEI stops then it bounces back upto full speed. Weird.

Re: X220 i7 8Gb very slow WEI for Processor

Just done a superpi run at full speed. It did pi to 1 million places in 11 seconds which sounds about right (four seconds quicker than my desktop!) and did not slow down at all so perhaps this is a WEI issue rather than a Lenovo problem.

Re: X220 i7 8Gb very slow WEI for Processor

[ Edited ]

Just had a quick thought about my machine and put the old hard drive that it came with back in to replace the ssd to see what happened. The WEI was run again and it said 7.1 for CPU and memory instead of 3.4 and 5.6!

Original 320Gb Hard Disk:-

CPU 7.1

Memory 7.1

Graphics 5.9

Gaming Graphics 6.3

Hard Disk 5.9

So that means the hardware is fine including the BIOS (1.19) and the culprit is probably the power management software in some way.

I just put the ssd back (as there is no way I am doing without that!) and ran the WEI again and it is still reading 3.4 for the CPU.

Crucial SSD:-

CPU 3.4

Memory 5.6

Graphics 5.9

Gaming Graphics 6.3

Hard Disk 7.9

Hmm I am not sure I am any further forward now!

Re: X220 i7 8Gb very slow WEI for Processor

Did you install Windows 7 from scratch on your new SSD (Not from Lenovo recovery disc) or did you clone the original hard drive?

I cloned my original drive before even starting the laptop for the first time, to my SSD. then powered up and proceeded the lenovo preload for the first time.

I cloned my original drive that the X220 came with, used the recovery disks to install W7 on the X220 and then used Acronis to clone the original drive back onto the ssd. I have just cloned my ssd again (so I can go back to where I am now) and will try doing a Lenovo recovery onto the ssd to see if that changes anything.

My suspicion is either the ssd is causing a power management problem or there is software added to my system after 31 May (when I installed my ssd) that changes the power management. Once I have ruled out the ssd, I will progressively try newer Lenovo software to isolate the rogue software.

Whenever I try to run the WEI the screen noticably dims by two notches and then brightens as soon as the benchmark is finished.
