X220 laptop - Battery Li-ion

Hello,

For professional purpose, we are using a thinkPad X220 4287 laptop.

For a use in aircraft, it is mandatory that the Li-ion batteries are tested under UL1642.

I am looking for the certificate of conformity of the batteries against UL1642.

Can anyone help me where to find this information?

Many thanks.

UL1642 is a compliance standard for individual LiON battery cells, not for battery packs made up of multiple cells.

Can you please indicate which regulation, from which jurisdiction, you found this mandaory requirenment in?

BTW, as far as I am aware, most Levnovo ThinkPad battery packs are compliant with the UL standard for battery "packs" - UL 2054 and/or UL 60950

Cheers,

Re: X220 laptop - Battery Li-ion

Hello,

I know the UL1642 std applies on cells but I tool a shortcut...:smileytongue:

The study concerns the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) that is used in the cockpit to host airports charts, performances applications, etc... to be used by the pilots.

Such PED (personal Electronic Device) shall (or should) be compliant with TGL-36 (EASA guidance) which contains a requirement related to Li-ion batteries.

OK, so its a Euro JAA requirement.... I'll pass it on to Lenovo staff for specific comment.

Does anyone have an email address to contact Lenovo staff in order to ask them the question?

Many thanks in advance.

Re: X220 laptop - Battery Li-ion

OK, this may also be useful.....

http://www.lenovo.com/lenovo/us/en/compliance.html

"Lithium batteries are subject to a number  of transportation regulations for all modes of transportation both in the United States and globally.  Regulatory agencies governing the transportation of these batteries include the  US Department of Transportation, International Civil Aviation Organization  (ICAO), International Air Transport Association (IATA) and International  Maritime Organization (IMO).

The Lenovo  Battery Declaration of Conformity (DoC) is a document that confirms Lenovo’s conformance to US and WW transportation requirements.  The Lenovo Battery DoC lists the applicable  preconditions, testing and the regulations assessed for compliance.

Information about batteries is available at www.lenovo.com/support/batteries.  Specific battery MSDS and test certificates  are available from the Lenovo Regulatory Compliance Department upon request (e-mail compliance@Lenovo.com and include your battery part number."

Re: X220 laptop - Battery Li-ion

Hi,

FYI, I have compare UL1642 std and UN Manual test and Criteria Part III subsection 38.3. The tests are similar and compliant to what I was looking for.

Many thanks again for your support!!

Emma.
