can the drive be swapped out or removed to install the optional 3 cell battery?
Yes, but its not a bay-like hot swap. You need to disaseemble the X300 to do it.
Cheers,
Are you sure you need to disassemble the X300 to remove the DVD drive? It appears that you just need to unscrew two little screws and the DVD unit just slides out, making room for the additional battery.
Regardin WUSB: apparently WUSB doesn't have an official approval yet in Europe(don't know about other countries).
This seems to be reason why the interface isn't available yet from Lenovo. The HSDPA equipped X300 has room for the WUSB interface, it seems to be next to the Intel WLan interface, install is a no-brainer, very simple.
Another thing, not that it really matters because it would be very pricey: the 64GB SSD slides out easily, it can be swapped for the upcoming 128GB SSD. I already had a Toshiba R500 prototype with 128GB SSD in my hands(apparently the SSD was from Toshiba this time and not from Samsung but I may be wrong, there was a huge sticker), very nice, very extra space is worth a lot. However: it seems that the 128GB SSD comes(at the beginning) at a very steep price tag, so maybe the 64GB SSD is still the way to go for the next couple of months.
A friend who is an Apple Employee(not at an Apple store

) also spotted a Macbook Pro(!) with 128GB SSD, so the 128GB SSD can't be too far away.
X300 (6478-15G), Intel SL7100 CPU 1.2GHz and X3100 GPU, 3GB RAM, 64GB SSD, HSDPA, Vista Business 32bit, 6 cell and 3 cell bay battery
