Re: X60 - Screen flickers and screen shutoff - problem with power management or hardware failure?

my only fix that i can find that works is that I

unistalled  the intel chipset vga driver

then i have a 19" flat screen monitor plugged in,

the laptop screen is black, but the monitor is not,

so now i have the nice compact x-60 and a huge bulky monitor that I carry around everywhere

it sucks !!!!!!!!

but it works

Calling Mark_Lenovo

[ Edited ]

Hi Mark

Can you please comment on the progress on what you reported in this thread. There seems to be no further input from any Lenovo members on this.

I think what we are experiencing is a significant problem and is being reported by more and more users. Please look into this.

Thanks

Re: X60 - Screen flickers and screen shutoff - problem with power management or hardware failure?

Hi,

I have had similar symptoms to this problem on my X60s. Screen flicker (kinda randomly) plus total blackouts (sometimes black, occasionally grey and even one time yellow). The problem was most likely related to battery + wifi (and this you could suspect heat since when I'm not at a desk with power cable you can imagine I'm running the laptop in my lap or in some other less airflow-optimal position.

I was running afaik bios 2.17 earlier this morning but ran the update utility and took in all the critical and important updates. This seems to have fixed the most accute problem since I've run through my battery (normal + extension) life without a single blackout now. From what I remember the update installed updates for the modem, the power managment and a new connection manager utility (the old one was broken so I used the windows one). I doubt the modem drivers had anything todo with this since I've never used it, but who knows..

This is my current system information (this was in my native language so I translated it a bit):

Date: 2008-11-25 23:50:31

OS: Microsoft Windows XP

version: 5.10.2600   Service Pack 2

Processor: x86 Family 6 Model 14 Stepping 12

RAM: 3 135 852 kb

BIOS-version: 2.17  (7BETD6WW)

Model: 17045UG

BIOS-version: 2.17  (7BETD6WW)

BIOS-datum: 2008-06-19

Controller: 1.13

Model: 17045UG

Thanks for all the information provided in this thread, I hope my post helps someone or atleast encourages them to not give up on their X60 :smileytongue:

This is a peer-to-peer support and discussion forum.  While there are a few Lenovo employees roaming around in here helping out on a volunteer basis, this is not an official support channel.  You may or may not get an answer or comment directly from one of the Lenovo employees as there are way more of us than them and all of them, even Mark, have full-time jobs doing other things.

Re: X60 - Screen flickers and screen shutoff - problem with power management or hardware failure?

Hi Nonny,

you might not have found it in the long thread here. But Lenovo actually participated already here, asked forum members to support helping to fix the issue, but never again reported back...

More then ever, if there is a Lenovo Support Forum - setup by Lenovo as its also linked from the Lenovo page in order to find support - Lenovo should better be responsive and take their existing customers serious.

It doesn't work that way, a community doesn't run by itself in cases with problems like this. When I started this thread, I already spoke to an official support channel, who told me: "can't be a problem, as noone else reported it" :-/ I used the forum to find a confirmation by other users - and there are a lot. This cummunity did its duty - it confirmed the bug, its easy to be reproduced..

Now its Lenovos task to handle and communicate back...

All about trust, respect and responsibility. Otherwise users turn away from a community in which they are not heart or taken serious.

Maybe you as volunteering moderator of the forum can take this back to Lenovo? Its a real communications problem and causes more frustration than appreciation.

Re: X60 - Screen flickers and screen shutoff - problem with power management or hardware failure?

To add to dsp's post, Lenovo have asked for a volunteer to send in a laptop for inspection and diagnosis. They then said they had found a volunteer who would send in their laptop but never made any comment since.

So what happened? Did they receive a laptop for diagnosis? Did they manage to replicate the issue? What were their findings? At least they should follow up and let us know what happened.

Allyou need to do is google around for this and you'll find the problem mentioned on other forums and sites but with no solution. Lenovo must be aware of the problem but seem to be ignoring it hoping it will go away I guess.

Re: X60 - Screen flickers and screen shutoff - problem with power management or hardware failure?

To add an observation I discovered while on a trans atlantic flight. I have a presentation scheme created for watching movies which switches all timers off. I was watching a film with this film scheme set (a scheme where all timers were switched off). I managed to watch 3 complete films without any flicker or the display going blank all on my extended battery. Normally, it would have expected the screen to flicker and blank without fail.

So switching the timers off using the presentation manager seems to influence the screen flicker issue. Could we be looking in the wrong place? Could it be a bug with the presentation scheme manager? I'll need to do some more tests but it's worth exploring further.

Re: X60 - Screen flickers and screen shutoff - problem with power management or hardware failure?

yes i understand the situation like you said nonny,

did my post provoke you? because i can assure you that i didnt have any intention to provoke you in any manner, if it did provoke you emotionally i'd be more than happy to appologize and take back what i have posted.

as you can see other members who followed up the thread surely see it differently, what i said clearly was not to turn the thread into 'lenovo-bashing' thread.

Nonny,

I once again appologize, but should i? because i didn't expect for such respond as i didn't intend to provoke anybody in here...it is greatly expected that peers who might have any new news regarding this matter to reply and this is what is expected.

I am sorry but looking at your respond, it reminds me of calling a firm's help and support hotline and hear a recording says like:

"we are sorry, but our representative (with s if there are more than one) is/are extremely busy, they are currently running around doing their jobs. Please HOLD"
