hibernation uses battery?

When I put the thinkpad x100e into hibernation mode, I find that when I turn it on again several hours or days later, that the battery indicator is down a few percentage points from when I had put it into hibernation.  Is this normal? Why should there be battery drain when the computer is in hibernation mode but not when I shut it down completely? I understand why in sleep mode there may be battery drain but I don't understand it when it is in hibernation.
