Hi have a problem with my x61s.

Two days ago the computer started doing weird things under vista. I had to make a hard reboot. Since, vista never boot up. The hard drive is not even seen by the bios. And I have a "Error 2100 - Hard drive initialization error".

I went on google to find a solution and I found this :

But (there is a but) the solution I found only works for Hitachi/Fujistu/Toshiba, and my hard drive is a Seagate...

The problem seems common. I'm a bit disapointed, as I used the laptop for a week... I did no backup, and I'm afraid I've lost a whole week of work...

I got lenovo support on the phone.
They only accept to change the hard drive, wich means losing all my data...
They say it's a mechanical problem, although they have firmware updates for other hard disk brands. They say they cannot get any firmware updates from seagate...

I don't understand how they can have updates from hitachi/fujitsu/toshiba and nothing for a seagate disk they shipped with the x61s !

Well, Seagate seems to have a different update policy here than the other storage manufactors, according to their FAQs...

There is no firmware available for our standard distribution ATA/SATA drive models.

Firmware could possibly be changed if the drives were modified by an OEM vendor, so this would be supported through the OEM vendor only.

Firmware only applies to OEM units for ATA/SATA models which are supported by the OEM vendor, not Seagate.

To determine the OEM vendor, refer to your original place of purchase.

I have same problem on T61 Seagate momentus 120GB. I have tried lenovos update cd but it didnt help

Hi,

I became another unforunate user with this problem just yesterday.  I was using Type 7762 x61t and then suddenly Vista gave me a BSOD.  I tried rebooting but it would not get past the boot screen. After boot, it would just stay idle there with the hard drive access light on (but I could not hear any hard drive activity).  Rescue and Recovery cannot start a well.  I tried other post-boot tools to see if they can do anything, but without the BIOS detecting the hard drive properly, there's nothing they can do.  The BIOS' HDD Diagnostic test passed initially, but after reseating the hard drive, the same tests failed and I received the 2100 HDD Initialization error message. 

Btw, I am using the seagate HD and I have tried the firmware update for the other hard drives, no luck.

I called tech support and they are sending my lappy in for servicing.  I am mostly worried about my data right now.

Are there any updates to this problem?  More specifically, was anyone successful at retrieving their data from their HD after this happened? (My HD isn't encrypted).

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

Hey guys,

Although I am dealing with a T61 laptop with this same issue, I too, tried the HDD firmware update for the HDD to no avail.  I also tried a BIOS update and reseating the HDD as well.  Neither of these work.  I found this from Lenovo's website regarding this problem:

Steps to resolve:
1. Reseat the hard drive
2. Repair/Replace Main hard drive
3. Repair/Replace System board

 I am replacing the HDD.  If you guys are looking to get any data off your HDD, there may be a way without costing you too much money, although its not guarenteed to get all your data off.  I use an adapter that can be bought at any computer place that allows me to connect any IDE/SATA type HDDs to my computer via USB.   The one I use is called 4 in 1 USB2.0 To IDE & SATA Cable (supports 1.8"/2.5"/3.5" IDE and Serial ATA Hard Disk -- ACP brand)  Its not a guarentee to get all your data, but its an option to do so while waiting for your replacement drive to come from Lenovo.

But ya, as most of you found out, the drive needs to be replaced...

Sorry for bumping an old thread.  I have a x61 tablet and started to have this Error 2100 problem today (laptop was working fine last night).  I called Lenovo and they are sending me a new hard drive and Windows installation DVDs.  The problem for me is that my x61 tablet does not have a DVD drive so I have to somehow get a hold of an external drive.......

The question I have for those of you who have had this problem before is: did you all have to replace the hard drive?  If so, did the problem occur again afterwards?  Thanks!
