(volunteer needed) x100 locks up

[ Edited ]

hi

purchased 2nd lenovo x100e for our company last week and have nothign but trouble with it

i loaded the presinstalled image, joined it to our domain and loaded office 2007 and when i started updating the outlook 2007 cached mode mailbox the computer would basically just lock where the screen would dimm a little and nothing works (image just remains static, mouse and keyboard no longer respond and cannot ping the machine either, completely dead) and only forcing power down works, there is nothing in the event logs

so i udpated all the drivers and bios updates and installed all the windows patches and the same continued to happen. sometimes it locks up after 10 minutes and sometimes after 8 hours, over the weekend i left the laptop on but with no applications running apart from the standard lenovo stuff and it still locked up

i rebuild it from scratch with the lenovo recovery partion and this time did not update anything but again it locks up

ran a full hardware diagnistics (from bios and from pc tools) and all test ran fine so no issues.

am now running a harddrive fitness test from a floppy to see if the harddisk is faulty

anyone else seeing this happen? i have ordered a replacement unit today as i need to get this laptop out to my users and lenovo's return policy can take up to 3 weeks to resolve.

cheers

Re: x100 locks up

I have the same issue, which is caused by a wired ethernet connection.  On another forum I created a topic in which another user claimed the same issue.  However, after installing Windows XP, the issue went away.  See here (the link button is now allowing me to insert the link properly) : http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=87293

1) Is the new x100e a dual core model with the L625 processor?

2) You stated that this is your second purchase.  What Model did you purchase before?  Do you have any problems with that machine?

While in no way is this an acceptable solution, you should be able to run it without freezing using wireless (if available).

I'll be putting in a call to Lenovo technical support today about the issue and reply back.

Re: x100 locks up

I put in a call to Lenovo and they stated that this issue will require the mainboard to be replaced because the ethernet card is integrated into the unit.

I'd suggest to make sure that the unit works without issues when connected wirelessly, then I would call the issue into Lenovo technical support.

Re: x100 locks up

that is interesting, yes i have the dual core amd processor

it seems to happen when outlook was updating huge amounts of data (downloading 3gb worth of archived emails from the evault archive server)

having said all that it is currently working fine on the LAN, i have left it on overnight to see if it would hang again. the laptop is mainly going to be used on the wifi and wwan card and i don't think it will be used very often with a lan cable

the other lenovo laptop was a single core AMD processor, i have not experienced issues with it when setting it up (had it for about 3 days) and the end user has not reported any issues but mainly uses it on the wwan and wifi links

will do some more testing tomorrow and will also see if i can reproduce the error on the 3rd x100e (which i purchased this afternoon to replace the faulty one i posted about) and will let you know

Re: x100 locks up

I normally run my X100e off WLAN or WWAN, but I wired it up to my LAN router today it locked up twice within 30 minutes. I was doing no more than simple web browsing. It's an L625 dual core. I'll be calling Lenovo Service about it.

Re: x100 locks up

After a discussion with the Lenovo Service Technician here in Australia, we've determined that Windows Update downloads a newer version of the Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller driver than available on from the Lenovo support site. I've uninstalled this driver from Windows Update and re-installed the driver from the Lenovo support site:

http://www-307.ibm.com/pc/support/site.wss/document.do?lndocid=MIGR-74332

Check your driver in Device Manager, it should be version 7.11.1127.2009, not higher. Also careful when you run Windows Update next time that it doesn't install the newer Realtek driver again.

I've been connected to wired LAN for quite a while now and experienced no lock-up so far. It could also explain why Windows XP users haven't had this issue, as the drivers are different of course.

If I do get a lock-up, I'll report back here. If not, hopefully this may avoid a lot of X100e being sent in for service unnecessarily.

It is worth mentioning that I also updated to the latest BIOS - v1.23 - at the same time, but I doubt that this had an impact on the problem:

Re: x100 locks up

the laptop runs the same version of that LAN driver

when my x100 kept locking up i did not update the lan card driver. same laptop that locked up many times in the last 2 days has now not locked up in over 15 hours while connected to the LAN. go figure!

I will now update all the lenovo drivers and apply the windows updates and see if that makes a difference

when it locked up it used to lock up mostly when transferring large amounts of data from a server to this laptop, mainly outlook,

I will also update the bios to 1.23 (am on 1.22 now) and will report back.

Re: x100 locks up

you can also try the xp driver, it will work in win seven w/o much drawbacks.

Just when I thought all was well, I just had a lock-up. Again doing no more than web browsing. Could still be a driver issue. I will contact Lenovo again.

Re: x100 locks up

did your most recent lock up happen while on the LAN, i have now updated all windows security patches (but not lan driver) and have copied 4 large 5GB files to and from the laptop without any issues

am just making a rescue and recovery image and will leave it connected for the remainder of the day to see what happens.

it is just odd that without making any changes since i have put the call in yesterday afternoon about the laptop locking up it has not locked up at all. makes it kind of difficult to troubleshoot further
