x220 IPS - very poor viewing angles?

[ Edited ]

Hi everybody,

recently got an x220i 4290HP1 model instead of stolen 4290LB4.

found out the screen to show very poor view angles. Yes it's certainly IPS as there is no color shift or inversion like with TN, but the brightness is dimming greatly withing 5-10 degrees range!

actually, it is causing eyestrain even when looking straight at 90 degrees.

i will attach a video shortly - can you check and tell if my screen is just OK or if i should seek for replacement?

thanks in advance!

Evgeniy

Try getting the model number of the LCD using Everest/AIDA/Moninfo/etc. Maybe it's a different panel? Maybe it's just how it is?

You should check wether you have an IPS or a TN screen. Comparison : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p8MO-XaCZ_8

Yes, the model is supposed to have "Premium" IPS panel according http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/product-and-parts/default.page even it is X220i (which is strange beacuse the "i" models have TN panels only over here). But ... I tried to search local model 4287-5AG having TN panel for sure and the site still reports "12.5-in. HD (1366x768) LED backlight premium LCD Service Parts - ThinkPad X220, X220i". I think the information provided by Lenovo for your model is misleading :smileymad:

The Premium panel is actually e-IPS which is not full IPS (like desktop S-IPS, P-IPS) panel, if you are comparing it side-by-side with x-IPS desktop monitor. I also notice small changes in brightness but it is still far better than any TN panel.
