I do, but the first thing I did when I got it was to turn off all the Vista fluff and gadgets.  The casual user would think it's running XP Pro (or maybe even Windows NT).

The only problem I have with it is with the sound turning itself off periodically.  Other than when that happens, it just runs for days and sometimes weeks without being rebooted.

I also don't regularly apply driver or software updates for anything just because they're available (other than virus defs).  When I do update, I apply good change management practices so that if something breaks I have a idea as to what broke it.

I think, you've got bad luck only. I am running Vista x64, x32 before and everything OK, however WLAN could be faster :smileyhappy:
Try to change RAM or run only one and then second...maybe is faulty some slot, maybe procesor. I would start with changing RAM's and continue with asking to check motherboard and procesor in warranty service. Their tests can run 24 hour continously so any problem is there, i think they will find it.

Good luck, and I feel sorry about your problem, because it's really expensive piece of electronic.

Re: x300 Freezing Problem

I have a X301 and it also locks up frequently.  I initially received it with Vista and erased it and installed XP Pro.  I recently put Vista back on it and it locks up with any operating system.  It will lock up while doing something on the laptop and it will lock up when just taking notes in a meeting with the machine mostly idle.  I have loaded minimal applications this time around, but it still locks up.  I think if they come out with a BIOS update that would fix it.  I try to keep up with the latest Lenovo software updates in hope of a fix.

Any suggestions people have, please post. Thanks.

Re: x300 Freezing Problem

I had the exact same problem back in June on my brand new X300.  I tried everything, I finally gave up and called Lenovo support.  They said that they had a few similar calls about the X300 but as it was within the first 30 days after receiving it they sent out an engineer.  The phone support thought it was probably the wi-if card or the hard drive so they sent out new ones and the engineer replaced them.  An hour after left it froze again!  Called Lenovo and they authorised a replacement.

I finally got the replacement and touch wood it has not happened again.

Not that I am normally a conspiracy theorist but I suspect that Lenovo knows about the issue, and it is probably a hardware issue but it only effects a small percentage of units.  My advice is call them and first let them try and fix it, if they can't ask for a new machine.

Hope that helps...  :smileyhappy:

Hi,

I'm starting to suspect that Lenovo didn't do his job correctly testing Windows Vista Business for their USD$2500 laptops.

I am very disappointed with it given the fact that this is the most expensive laptop I have ever bought and I'm having a problem that looks that nobody can solve :smileysad:

I'm now forced to downgrade to XP and see if the OS is the problem... I will post the results after a week of intense testing.

Question:  Has anyone managed to have Windows Vista Business running smoothly on an X300/X301 Thinkpad?

Carlos.

I have had my X300 for a week now and it has not frozen once. I am running Windows Business 32-bit. I don't like the OS, but it works for me. Not a single problem yet.

Re: x300 Freezing Problem

At this point, I've been using my x301 for only a couple days.  It is running the preloaded factory image of Vista Business 32bit but I removed all the unnecessary junk (Rescue and Recovery, etc.).

During this time I have had minimal freezing.. mainly just quick freezes while browsing in Firefox and after it freezes for a few seconds, it eventually begins responding (no more than a couple seconds).

I will keep a closer eye on it and report back.

Re: x300 Freezing Problem

I have exactly the same problem being described here - what seem to be completely random freezes in both XP and Vista 64 bit Business. The only solution to the problem being a hard reset. I have tested my memory both using a microsoft tool and memtest86 and it is fine. I am now using Ubuntu 8.10. Initially it would not even install - citing an I/O error. I remember reading about the AHCI being problematic for some users installing Vista as the drivers are not loaded properly. I changed AHCI to compatibility mode and I was able to install Ubuntu. Since then I have had no problems with lock - ups. So, the freezing may have been caused by the AHCI setting in the bios, or something (drivers?) loaded by Windows XP and Vista. Perhaps the other windows users could test the bios setting and see if this cures their issues. Additionally, if the AHCI setting is to blame, what does this imply? There seems to be little loss of practical usability in changing to compatibility mode. I should also note that I used both the windows test utilities and the bios utilities to check the HDD - both of which stated that the drive was healthy.

Edit: My machine is the X301 with 64Gb SSD.

Re: x300 Freezing Problem

Hi Ben, thanks for the advise.

This morning I changed the SATA settings on the BIOS from AHCI to Compatibility mode.  I started working normally and eventually a freeze came-out :smileysad: (hard reset was the only choice).

Every day I am more convinced that this is an unusual hardware problem.  The folks at Lenovo Colombia know it and I hope tomorrow I will get a complete X300 replacement. I will keep you posted.

Thanks for your help,

Carlos
