x60s 1704 XP Pro 32bit memory upgrade

Greetings and apologies,

I read through the KB on this one but wanted to be absolutely clear. I'm running 2gb (2- 1gb sticks) of memory in my x60s 1704 and want to add more. OS is XP Pro 32 bit. I understand my machine will see 4gb but only utilize 3. If I pull one 1gb stick and replace it with a 2gb stick am I anomaly free? Do I need to reconfigure settings anywhere? Does this upgrade make sense to you? 2gb sticks are inexpensive and could really use more ram. Go/No Go? Negligible return? Appreciate your patience and kind reply in advance.

you won't see much differents with the speed even with 4 GB & x64 bit os you're not going to see much differents maybe small differents when multi tasking

Re: x60s 1704 XP Pro 32bit memory upgrade

Can I replace a 1gb stick with a 2gb stick or do they have to be installed in pairs?

Ok, just so I'm clear. A 1gb stick and a 2gb stick for a total of 3gb is doable for my x60s and I will be able to utilize all 3gb in XP 32 bit. Yes? Appreciate your patience.

[ Edited ]

yes thats what I have in my x61T edit: with x64 bit you might be able to use 8 GB ram I'm really not clear on which models can but some of the members here run 8 GB the GPU limits you to 3 GB even with 64 bit OS

Re: x60s 1704 XP Pro 32bit memory upgrade

someone [Andy] just jogged my memory the intel chip set 950 graphic chip limits you to 3 GB memory even with a 64 bit OS

Re: x60s 1704 XP Pro 32bit memory upgrade

it is not the GPU that limits you to the 3 gigs ram limit in the X60, T60, R60, Z61, but rather the Intel chipset 945GM (there also another variant of intel chipset in some model of the R60e that limits you to the 2 gigs limit).

Re: x60s 1704 XP Pro 32bit memory upgrade

Update: Pulled one of my Crucial 1gb sticks and Installed a 2gb Kingston Value stick for twenty-three bucks in its place. Machine booted to 2.99 gb of memory. All is well. Thanks for the input.
