My Z61t cover lid is not smooth anymore

[ Edited ]

Hello everyone! I don't know how prevalent is this amongst us Z series with titanium lid owners, but it appears my Z61t cover lid is not smooth anymore:

Did anyone else experience this and if so, did anyone tried to get it replaced with Lenovo?

Quite a puzzling conundrum:smileyindifferent: Anyway what exactly do you mean, is it all peeling, or just alittle rough?

Re: My Z61t cover lid is not smooth anymore

It's not exactly peeling, but the finishing/top coating appears to be coming off if you rub it or scratch it hard enough. After that it gets a little rough too, with tiny little bumps.

The weird thing is, some of my friends actually find that it makes my laptop look really unique. That's the main reason why I'm still contemplating changing it, hahahaha :smileyvery-happy:

Yup. I have the same "problem" with my Z61m. That top layer started to come off on the front where you open the lid.

Re: My Z61t cover lid is not smooth anymore

I'm having the same worries about my Z61m titanium lid.

Right now, the peeling is not yet too severe (just in the front side near the latches) but I'm thinking, if it gets worse, I'll just buff all of the remaining clear paint away to reveal the shiny titanium inside. Then, I'll have to worry about scratches. As such, I hope the peeling won't get worse.

Anyone else having the same problem?

Re: My Z61t cover lid is not smooth anymore

Interestingly the top edges are still fine for my cover lid, just the front that has the smooth finishing gone... it looks like the cover lid had a break out of pimples or something like that.

I visited the Thinkpad service centre in Singapore back in May and they actually told me it was due to corrosion... I'm not a chemistry student, anyone care to enlighten me how can titanium corrode if you have been putting it inside a sleeve such that any sweat on my forearms ought to be abosorbed by the sleeve first?

I'm getting a replacement at the end of the year anyways, my Thinkpad too one too many knockings and it's due for a change... hope they still have stock for the titanium cover lid!

Re: My Z61t cover lid is not smooth anymore

corrosion isn't the correct term used by service.   titanium is one of the most corrosion-resistent metals.   the lid in your your photo shows looks like oxidation to me.

your lid is a titanium alloy -- it's not pure titanium.   the oxidation and discoloration you see could be caused by certain chemical cleaners, your environment, or even from handling.

i had a titanium alloy case for a palm Vx about 7~8 years ago and it discolored much like your photo.   i never thought anything of it and actually liked how it looked. :smileyhappy:

if lenovo singapore is willing to give you a replacement then you might as well get it.   however, just know that your replacement might discolor, too. :smileywink:

I'm fine with the appearance, hahaha... :smileyvery-happy: Just that the roughness doesn't look as "nice" yeah?

Unfortunately, they are not going to give a replacement, I'll have to pay for it... :-|
