Upgrading WWAN on the ThinkPad X220T Tablet

Upgrades, WWAN, X220T

Question

I have a X220 tablet and have been playing with the x220 and was wondering what mini pci-e wwan modules could I get. Is there a Lenovo page offering Lenovo-branded modules? Could I just go out on the web and buy one? What software is needed to make it work?

Answer

If a system is ordered as WWAN upgradable, it means that the antenaes are in place, but no WWAN card is included in the config.  Lenovo offers several cards and they must be cards which are whitelisted in the BIOS for support.  This is to meet FCC test and certification requirements for each supported configuration.

Typical Gobi3000 card installation shown.   Note: WWAN cards typically have 2 antanae wires that will be either blue and red or black and blue.  The WIFI (802.11 b/g/n) cards in ThinkPads will have either 2 or 3 antanae wires which will be black and grey or white, grey, and black.

The whitelisted cards are shown in the Hardware Maintenance Manual:
