Yoga Tablet 8 Issues With Chrome After 12/19/2013 Firmware Update

2014-01-13, 16:45 PM

I'm on my 3rd Yoga Tablet 8 from BestBuy now.  All three had a Build number of B6000_A422_000_031_130926_WW_WIFI, the September 26th 2013 version.  All three worked fine in every aspect, until I downloaded and installed the "update" that was showing under [System upgrade].  After upgrading to the B6000_A422_000_059_131219_WW_WIFI build number, the December 19th 2013 update, I saw this issue on all three devices.  The Chrome browser that shipped with the unit (version 28.0.1500.94) worked fine, as did the update from the Google Play store (version 31.0.1650.959), available as of Jan 9th, 2014.  Browsing to pages on Yahoo all worked and watching videos from there was great.  After the firmware update to (B6000_A422_000_059_131219_WW_WIFI), the latest Chrome Browser kept crashing all the time with the "Aw, Snap!" error.  It did this while just going to pages on Yahoo, as well as when trying to watch video clips.  Using the Apps manager, after "uninstalling" the Chrome update taking the app back to the version that shipped with the unit, the issue completely went away.  Thus the latest Chrome browser was the issue running on the latest B6000_A422_000_059_131219_WW_WIFI firmware.  Since you can not "roll back" the Lenovo firmware update to the one that shipped with the unit, returning it and getting a new one with the original September 2013 build number, was the only option to run the latest Chrome browser.  I've had the exact same results on all (3) units.  I'm reluctant to get a 4th unit from BestBuy and keep it at the original September 2013 build number, just so I can use the latest Chrome Browser.  Maybe with the next release of Chrome, this might not be a problem, but I do not know that.  I need Lenovo to acknowledge and confirm this is a "bug" in their latest firmware, and state how they are going to address it before I concider buying a 4th unit.  I don't want to have to keep the unit at the original September or October of 2013 build number, just so this issue is not there.  I also don't want to upgrade the firmware, and have to run the original Chrome browser version, and never upgrade it.  If anyone has not upgraded to the B6000_A422_000_059_131219_WW_WIFI build yet, can you confirm the latest Chrome browser works without getting the "AW Snap!" errors constantly?  If anyone has upgraded to the B6000_A422_000_059_131219_WW_WIFI build yet, can you confirm the latest Chrome browser constantly gets the AW Snap!" errors?  I used Yahoo's site for all my testing.

Hi guys,

unfortunately there´s an issue with Chrome with b8000 422-000-059-131219-ww-wifi

on a 10 inch model as well.

Uninstalling all Chrome updates is a workaround perhaps. I had Chrome freezes with the factory Chrome installation too.

The issue has been escalated already.

Best

Andreas

I haven't updated to the new firmware but Chrome was just updated today. Are you all still having issues after the Chrome update?

On the same line of issues...

Does anyone know why FoxFire doesn't work at all on this device?

It crashes immediately!

I actually went to BestBuy and got a 4th tablet, and have kept it at the original 130926 Build.  I've had absolutely no issues with any software  (browser or otherwise) on it.  I just upgraded to the Jan16th 2014 (Chrome Browser 32.0.1700.99) that was just released.  On the original 130926 Build, it runs and opens pages without issue, no "Aw Snap!" crashes to speak of.  Others with the newer 131219 Build will have to comment on if the latest Chrome runs better.  I doubt it though since I thought I saw in this thread that Lenovo was pretty much aware their 131219 build had problems, and was the cause of all the browser issues.  I'm not upgrading this Tablet 8 to any new Build until I see others saying it is working reliably.

Andreas,  Thanks for the info/confirmation on Lenovo acknowleging the Chrome isse on both the Tablet 8 and Tablet 10 with the 130926 Build.  Is there any info on when a new Build is planning on being released to address that issue?  Seems like a pretty big issue if it effects both of their products, and with the main browser.  Thanks again.

topflite9914 - If you mean FireFox, then I have had no issues with it on the original 130926 build.  I've tried all the browssers and done comprehensive comparison testing, and once you load Adobe_Flash_Player_v11.1.115.20.apk, the Dolphin browser to me is the fastest rendering, and plays flash sites better than any other browser.

Jfeitzinger... You are correct Firefox... I'm running the 131219 build where all (the original one, chrome and Firefox) have issues. I haven't tried Dolphin. I also will need to look at the Flash_player version. Thanks!

jfeitzinger,

Just to clarify, Andreas, one of our volunteer moderators reporting his experience to Lenovo earlier and we are looking into it.

The info in this thread is helpful.  If we aren't able to reproduce this on our system by early next week, I might ask if one of the US based folks might let us have a look at their system.

Thanks

Mark

Chrome is up to 33.0.1750.136. Anyone have the newer 12/19/2013 firmware and the latest Chrome and can comment on the "Aw Snap" errors? Administrator? Any news on where lenovo is on addressing the issue and releasing a new firmware to address it? Thanks in advance to everyone for their input.
