Can not load Google based pages over wifi

2012-09-24, 6:31 AM

Can not do a search or load any Google related pages or upload pictures with only  WIFI on.  Need to go to 3G/WIFI or most of the time 3G only.

Am on a low data plan.  Can live with that as I mostly have WIFI access.

When Wifi does not work, can a computer on the same network connect? Is this your wifi or some public connection? Have you tried other wifi connections?

It is my home network;

A switch hard-wired to my ISP

2 wireless routers and a computer hard-wired to the switch

A wireless laptop and an iPad connected to the routers

Everything works well but the phone.  I can access non-Google related websites fine from the phone.

2 wireless routers? Are both handing out addresses? Are the ipad and laptop on the same address space as the phone?

Sounds like a weird DNS issue to me, but I can't tell much from the info provided. There are some free ping and network tools in the market. I would try doing a DNS lookup and tracert from the phone to get some more insight.

If only your home network is experiencing this problem, then it is not the phone, but something in your home network configuration.

Yo Alpha,

Thanks for hanging in with this.  I appreciate it.

So the strangest thing to keep in mind about this is that the problem only occurs with Google based pages like iGoogle, Picassa, and the worst of all Google searches and links.  I can access most other web sites with my browser OK.  Sometimes they are slow and sometimes they do not format correctly but that's to be expected on a phone.

I experience the same problem in the house or at other WIFI locations.

Back to my set-up.  I have 2 routers to extend coverage in an older 2 story home with a studio on the side.  The routers show up as 2 access points and I can choose either one depending on where in the house I am.  They are both older/slower Belkin 150.  I have a newer/faster router on order.

What ping or network tools would you suggest?

I haven't downloaded in a while, but there are lots of free ones - it would interesting to see what pinging google.com does.

Your other symptoms of being slow and not formatting correctly seem to point to some network issues.

But you say that this happens at other access points? So if you go to the library or a restaurant with free wifi, you still can't get to google? If so, that rules out your location.

Do you have any of the IP address hard coded on the phone (DNS?) or is everything Dynamic?

Hmmmmm...  How do you ping from a phone.  I know how to ping with the run command on windows.  Do I need a "ping" app?

My new router will arrive Fri or Sat.  I'm hoping it is just a performance issue.
