Bladecenter S Networking Configuration with ESXi 5.5

2018-02-03, 14:10 PM

We have a bladecenter S with 5 or 6 blades installed.

On the back of the blades we have IO slot 1 and 2 installed for networking.

We are running VMware 5.5 u3a and we have configured a standard switch.

For the management port group we have vmnic0 and 2 teamed to provide HA for management (and we would like vmotion too).

Vmnic2 connects from IO module 1 port 1 and Vmnic0 connects from IO module 2 port 1.  Both physical connections are set to auto/auto and have negotiated on a single Cisco 3750 as 1000 full.  The configuration is set to access ports in vlan 66.  The management address is 10.100.0.100.

When I ping 10.100.0.100 constantly everything is good and both ports are up.  As soon as I pull the cable physically out of VMnic2 the pings start dropping and go to a mix of destination host unreachable and request timed out.  On the cisco switch I can see that the active mac address for 10.100.0.100 has changed to Vmnic0 however its not replying.  When I replace the cable on Vmnic2 the pings are still dropping.  Communication only resumes once I have unplugged Vmnic0.

Is Vmnic2 and 0 not able to be teamed or can some one else see something I am not seeing.

What switch module is used for your chassis ? it's pass-though or full function switch module ?

If it's switch module ,to work with host side teaming ,the switch need to configure layer2 failover . Otherwise ,when you disconnect the uplink from switch module to coreswitch ,the host side won't know the connection is disconected,so the teaming won't work as expected.

If simple pass-though module is used, it's electronic signal extender , no any switching functionality ,in this case ,don't need any configuration on switch module for teaming.

Can you provide switch module type , network diagram and configuration of switch module ?

Or you can open a support ticket to Lenovo support for further analysis, when you open support ticket ,make sure you provide tech-support of io module and AMM logs .

Its an Intelligent 2/3 copper pass through module.

My company has a topology that they want us to use so I have attached that.

As there is no configuration on the IO Module I just have it configured in ESXI5.5 of which i have 6 blades all with hosts on them.  The teaming is just setup for vmnic0 and 2.  Both in the same vlan for managment and vmotion traffic.  I tested this thoroughly over the weekend and I cannot get vmnic0 to reply to any traffic at all.

Make sure you are not trying to configure the bond as 802.3ad, that is not supported. Try a simple switch-independent mode instead, such as balance-tlb.

Where would either of those options be defined? I dont think esxi5.5 gets that technical.

I'd recommend using the safest setting first to validate the configuration, that would be "Use explicit failover order". This will give you link redundancy but no aggregation. Keep in mind that any mode that requires switch interaction will not be compatible because the ICPM is not a switch, but a pass-through.
