Flex Chassis Fan Redundancy

Hi,

What is the redundancy level on fans in Flex Chassis? Is it N+N / N+1 redundancy?

 

Below link refer to 4 Zones on the Flex Chassis

Zone 1 with 80 mm fans slot 1, 2, 3, 4 provide cooling for the odd-numbered node bays 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, and 13.

 

Zone 2 with 80 mm fans slot 6, 7, 8, 9 provide cooling for the odd-numbered node bays 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, and 14.

 

Zone 3 with 40 mm fan slot 5 provide cooling for IOMs 2, 4 and CMMs.

 

Zone 4 with 40 mm fan slot 10 provide cooling for IOMs 1 and 3.

 

- What happens if Zone 1 fans (ie 1, 2, 3, 4) fails? Will the blades continue to run from the Zone 2 fans?

- What happens if Zone 3 fan (ie 5) fails? Will IOMs 2, 4 goes down?

Hi Errrec,

 

Each zones are separated and cannot share airflow between zones.

 

Node and switch are shutting down based on its temperature, not the number of running fans.

If any fan in zone is failed, other fans in same zone will ramp up for proper cooling. If compute node's temperature is still increased, CPU will be throttled. If the temperature is still high, node will be shutting down due to over temperature condition. Switch module is also shutting down if it reaches the limit of over temperature.

I understood, I couldn't find these details in the lenovo press/any product guide. It also means that Zone 3 & Zone 4 fan failures can make the IOMs unavailable.
