Flex System EN4023 10Gb with FCoE

Dear Support,

 

We have Flex System EN4023 10Gb Scalable with FCoE license for the CN4052 and EN4023 and we would like to use the external ports for both FC and Ethernet so 10Gb Eth SFP+ transceivers will be used for LAN connectivity while other external ports with 8/16Gb FC SFP+ transceivers for SAN connectivity. Is there any special configuration on EN4023 to be configured on the external ports to enable FCoE?

Yes, some commands are required to activate FCoE mode then change the operating mode of a port into Fibre Channel.

 

The document below has detailed information of the commands and how to use them (page 268)

Page 268 explains the "fcoe" command, which enables FCoE operations in the switch.

Page 763 explains the "portCfgFlexport" which allow you to change  the operating mode of a port between FC or Ethernet.

The EN4023 is like Brocade VDX series switch,and running NOS,not FOS.

To change the mode between FC and ethernet for flex port , you need use following commands:
**************
switch# configure terminal
switch(config)# hardware
switch(config-hw)# flexport 1/0/5
switch(conf-hw-flex-1/0/5)# type fibrechannel

The EN4023 “Lenovo Flex System EN4023 10Gb Scalable Switch” switches have the FCOE feature licenses installed and also on flex node adapters and enabled.

 

The problem is, when we insert an 8Gpbs SFP (FRU: 88Y6416) in any external switch port, the switch reports and incompatible SFP inserted as per the following:

 

2018/07/11-09:34:34 , [NSM-1019], 1196, SW/0 | Active | DCE, INFO, EN4023,  Interface TenGigabitEthernet 1/0/44 is administratively up.

EN4023(conf-if-te-1/0/44)# 2018/07/11-09:34:35 , [NSM-1028], 1197, SW/0 | Active | DCE, ERROR, EN4023,  Incompatible SFP transceiver for interface TenGigabitEthernet 1/0/44 is detected.

2018/07/11-09:34:35 , [NSM-1020], 1198, SW/0 | Active | DCE, INFO, EN4023,  Interface TenGigabitEthernet 1/0/44 is administratively down.

 

Switch FW version: 6.0.1

 

The port can only support 100/1000/10G speed, 8/16G are not listed!

 

Could you please advise regarding this issue?

By default ,the port is working on ethernet mode ,you need manually change mode to fibre channel with following commands provided in previous reply.

Make sure run following command on any external port which you want to be fibre-channel .
**************
switch# configure terminal
switch(config)# hardware
switch(config-hw)# flexport 1/0/44
switch(conf-hw-flex-1/0/44)# type fibrechannel
*********************

Hello,

 

Thanks for the below information.

After applied the below commands, the external ports are active and up now. But we are not able to see the WWN of the server from the external switch or sotrage. Any idea about this issue?

You need check your FCoE configuration, and if the fcoe connection is established. A tech-support logs is required for further analyzing.

We recommend you open a ticket to IBM/Lenovo Support.
