Inquiry - Flex System x240 Compute Node

Good morning everyone,
Hope you all are doing well. I'm performing some investigation regarding to these model of servers:

IBM Flex System x240 Compute Node - 8737-AC1
Inter Xeon CPU E5-2609 v2 @2.5 GHz

LENOVO Flex System x240 M5 Compute Node - 9532-AC1
Inter Xeon CPU E5-2608 v3 @2.00 GHz

I'm looking for some information about the optical fiber network connection for those servers.
Do you know if that is possible? If so, do you know what kind of adapter should be involved?

Thanks in advance,
Pablo Villarreal.

Re: Inquiry - Flex System x240 Compute Node

Hello,

The x240 nodes are embedded servers that are installed into an IBM or Lenovo Flex chassis and plug into the mid-plane of the chassis. As such they have no direct optical connection to anything, since it instead plugs in via copper to the midplane of the chassis. The midplane in offers slots in the rear of the Flex, that support different types of I/O modules for connection to the upstream world. And those Flex I/O modules support various types of fiber and copper uplinks out of the Flex chassis, depending on which you install.

Most commonly used are the various Ethernet switch modules and Fibre Channel switch modules, and which you make use of will impact what type of Ethernet NIC or FC HBA you would need to install in the x240 nodes.

For a general listing of what types of I/O modules are supported in the Flex, see table 4 in the following links:

https://lenovopress.com/tips0863-flex-system-enterprise-chassis

To better answer your specific question of what "optical fiber network" is supported, it would help if you can tell us if you are asking about Ethernet or Fibre Channel optical support?

Thanks, Matt

Re: Inquiry - Flex System x240 Compute Node

Thanks for your quick response Matt.

This is for Fibre Channel optical, so we are investigating the proper switch option for that chassis.

Pablo Villarreal.

Re: Inquiry - Flex System x240 Compute Node

Hello Pablo,

For Fibre Channel I/O modules you will mostly be looking at the FC5022 FC switch, with details being found here:

https://lenovopress.com/tips0870-lenovo-flex-system-fc5022-16gb-san-scalable-switches

To determine which one you want (there are two different versions + an option upgrade) you will need to decide how many ports you want to license, and if you want the "ISL/Trunking" feature. Also need to include any uplink optics you want to purchase (all covered in the link above). Table 9 in the above link shows the different Fibre Channel HBAs that you can use, but not all may apply to your server model. Specific to what FC HBA to use you should review the links to your specific models (listed below):

https://lenovopress.com/tips1090-flex-system-x240-compute-node-e5-2600-v2

https://lenovopress.com/tips1199-flex-system-x240-m5-e5-2600-v3

Hope this helps.

Thanks, Matt

Re: Inquiry - Flex System x240 Compute Node

>> Flex chassis support below FC switches:

Available Fibre Channel switches

FC5022 16Gb SAN Switch 88Y6374

FC5022 24-port 16Gb SAN Switch 00Y3324

FC5022 24-port 16Gb ESB SAN Switch 90Y9356

>> x240(8737, 7162) and x240 M5(9532) support below FC adapters:

Available Fibre Channel adapters

69Y1938 A1BM FC3172 2-port 8Gb FC Adapter

95Y2391 A45S FC5054 4-port 16Gb FC Adapter

Check Fibre Channel switch to card compatibility, above two adapters are all compatible with FC5022 switch.

And we're back...

Move delayed but still coming
