simultaneous memtest on all blades

2018-08-22, 13:26 PM

Hello,

I have Blade Center E 8677 with 14 x HS21 8853 blades hosted in a remote data center.
We are looking into upgrading memory on all from 8 to 16GB and are keen to test all memory afterwards.

A native quick memory test of 4 x 4GB stick takes approximately 1:10 hrs.
That's even longer for a 3rd party tool (e.g. a single cycle of Memtest86).

So the total time for 14 blades would be close to 24 hours :(

Not achievable in a single trip to DC, not to mention the downtime.

Is it somehow possible to test memory simultaneously on all blades and cut the total time to 1 or 2 hours?

Thanks,
Adam

Yes, you can do it.

-Create a PXE server with a very light live Linux and Google's "stressapptest" or Linux's "stress"

-Script the master image to execute the script at boot (e.g. on crotab add a @boot ./memtest.sh); you can calibrate the parameters in a test blade before deploying to all blades

-Update the boot order using either ASU or directly from the AMMs to boot to PXE first

-When the time is right, reboot all blades

-Let the test run and revert the boot order back to HDD0 (or else if you boot from somewhere else like SAN booting)

-When the test is over, the script can reboot the system and it should boot back to the production OS

TA for quick reply but...I can simply kick off native quick memtest (from F2 - diagnostics) on all blades simultaneously.

Later switch screen between them to check progress / results.

Not sure how I overlooked this simple fact...

The total run time shouldn't exceed 2 hrs (assuming they all pass) :)

There's no way to automate the launch of the internal diag tool. It was designed to be executed on a need-basis for individual systems.

It could be possible with a keyboard macro, but it may turn out being more complex than what I described above.

Booting to diagnostics could be automated by changing boot order, the problem is once you get in the diag, the keystrokes to kick in the memory test cannot be automated.
