Re: R&D Request: 4:rd gen 2016 X1 Carbon will have 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD option?

Compromise... let's have both.

Re: R&D Request: 4:rd gen 2016 X1 Carbon will have 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD option?

Along with the memory upgrade, please add the following -

USB 3.0C

fingerprint power-on (be nice if happened for 2015 X1)

100mm M2 capability

Thanks,

Re: R&D Request: 4:rd gen 2016 X1 Carbon will have 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD option?

In order of my preferences:

  1. Better brightness/contrast screen (probably requires stronger battery)
  2. 16GB (it's best if it's 2x8 so it's dual DIMM=fast but requires re-engineering and "heavier" laptop probably; 1x16 is still significant improvement but slower and probably significantly more expensive AFAIK)
  3. 1TB SSD (not so important for me, we live in the cloud, but should be very easy for Lenovo)
  4. USB type C (not so important for me, USB 3.0 is generally fast enough for me, I guess would require re-engineering)

If Lenovo cares about performance, you should really use dual DIMMs. Memtest86 throughput increased 50% when I added second DIMM to my X230. I read that integrated graphics performance benefit greatly by dual DIMM too. Ask your engineers.

IMHO X1C 2016 should have as options either 2x4G or 2x8G soldered memory. This delivers best performance (dual DIMM) and mobility (soldered so less weight). Only 4G RAM for premium X Thinkpad is too little and users would want to upgrade to 8G anyway.

EDIT: Searching on the web reveals that real-world performance improvement with dual DIMMs is tiny. For a laptop that has problems with battery life, dual DIMMs looks like overkill due to increased power consumption.

Re: R&D Request: 4:rd gen 2016 X1 Carbon will have 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD option?

Lenovo understands RAM. Look at how much you can cram into those new P-series mobile workstations. But they also understand designing laptops for specific segments of the market. 8GB on an "ultraportable" laptop is plenty for most folks. It only becomes a limitation when users push the limits for which the particular model was designed. Unfortunately this is something many users do - we find multiple uses for our mobile kit. As we adapt to new devices we get inventive. And it sucks to run up against limits imposed by the manufacturer, especially when it's an intentional design compromise based on cost.

I agree.  For the 4th gen x1 Carbon, please add capability to expand to 16gig.  Thanks!

Re: R&D Request: 4:rd gen 2016 X1 Carbon will have 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD option?

Hello,

Thanks for the feedback.  On the 3rd generation we will be enabling 16GB RAM and it will be available next month, September.  On 4th generation you will see improvements all round so I hope you like them when we launch in the not too distant future.

On the 1TB SSD be interested to get forum feedback on need for such large storage on the PC with cloud prevelant now and MS offering 1TB free storage.  Interested to here what users are doing with it.

Thanks

Mike

Thanks for the info!

1) So, a 16GB Carbon3 refresh available for purchase soon, yes?

2) Cloud storage is not appropriate in a number of info security situations. HIPAA might be a good example. Some folks will never use cloud storage "just because", and so, prefer local storage (hopefully with good backups).

Cheers!
