Recommended way to Wipe Data on HX Systems

2020-09-23, 17:01 PM

Hey Everyone

I am looking for the Lenovo recommended way to wipe drives in the HX Systems, is there a specific tool that Lenovo uses to do this? I found the Thinkpad tool but am looking for the server tool.

Thanks!

Joel

Hello jmotto,

Welcome to the community!

Can you please provide a little context to your situation?

Is this specific to HX systems or is this more of a generic HDD data wipe?

We are looking to Send some servers back from lease that our customer has some fairly sensitive data on so we want to ensure that we destroy the nutanix cluster (easy) and write 0/1s to all the drives to ensure they are not recoverable. This customer uses a mix of Lenovo HX5510 and HX5520 Models. This cluster does have data encryption at rest enabled but they still want a solution to over right the data mulitple times.

Thanks!

Joel

@ jmotto , welcome to the Lenovo forums. I have reached out to the internal support folks to get you an answer. I will post something as soon as I get a response.

@ jmotto

Here is what I got back from doing some research on this.

Do refer to the relevant articles depending on customer situation below:

Also, do note that when you do cluster destroy we basically do mkfs.ext4 on partitions, so we don’t do full secure erase. If customer is not using Self encrypting Drives, they might have to use third party tools to secure erase drives.

Please let me know if that helps and if you need anything else.

We are not using SEDs and we want to wipe data off of the drive after the Cluster is destroyed, since destoying the Nutanix cluster doesnt overwrite the drive with 0s or 1s mulitple times. is there a specific third party tool recommended by Lenovo?  if not that is okay as well I was just hoping there was something which was recommended by Lenovo.

Thanks!

Joel

@ jmotto,

I do not think that we have a specific recommended third party tool to accomplish this, but i'll look to see if I can find. I will need a little more time to research it but will get back to you with an answer.  Thank you.
