I recently connected the phone to my computer in the data transfer mode (see SD card as a windows device). There I cleaned up the .dcim folder: moved and deleted hundreds of pictures.
However Gallery still show them all as being on the phone. They appear in the overview complete with small 'icon' version. But the real pictures are of course not there.
I cannot get rid of the icons or the different index tags. For removed pictures the delete option is simply not there.
Delete is only a possibility for pictures that are still on the device.

Please go to settings--> applications--> manage applications--> all--> media storage
There, tap on clear cache and delete data.
This will delete the library of the media storage, but not the actual files. Reboot the phone and give it 5 minutes to rebuild the media library.
If that worked then your phone should display your photos correctly again.

I have the same problem...
The "Gallery" shows lots of blank thumbnails (icons) - but the actual photo files have been deleted.
There are aproximately 35 actual pictures, but the screen says 545 items..!!
I have tried clearing the Cache
Settings - Applications - Manage Applications - All - Media Storage - Clear Cache
But the Clear Cache button is greyed out and it says Cache 0.00B

That means the files are probably not correctly deleted. I assume that the photos are stored on the SD card?
How did you delete them, did you plug the phone into a computer and delete everything?
Let me know.

Yes the pictures are stored on the card - I believe they were originally deleted on the phone....BUT
since the thumbnails remained ..I think ...I went in on the computer & deleted the thumbnails.
(it was a while back) after that I discovered the message about clearing the cache - but was unable to as it was already 0 (zero).

Unmount and mount your SD card and have a look again if you can clear the cache and the data then of the media player.
You can as well clear data and cache of the gallery in the same way, but backup your 35 other pictures before you do this.
If this is still not helping, then you might need to look into the option of erasing your SD card completely for a fresh start.
Let me know how it goes.

When you say unmount & mount the SD card..?? What exactly do you mean..??
I have shut down the phone, removed the card, restarted the phone, then
shut down the phone again, replaced the card & restarted the phone.
This has had no effect on the displayed icons - but did take ages to reimport the data.

Sorry for the tech speak. What you did is exactly what I meant.
To mount the SD card means to have it recognized by the phone (usually happens automatically).
To unmount the SD card means to disconnect it/ take it out.
If this is not helping, then try to clear data and cache of the gallery and look into the option of erasing your SD card.
Let me know how it goes.

Question - where are the thumbnails (or the files responible for these icons) stored..??
I have :
1. saved the contents of the card.
2. Deleted everything off the card & checked that it is blank (I didnt go as far as a reformat)
3. Copied back everything except the "DCIM" folder.
I thought since that contained the "Camera" & " Thumbnail" folders...it would fix things.
But I once again have 545 + 1 recent one making 546 items in the Camera roll.
Only one is now actually a picture. The rest are icons.
Can you shed any light on the subject..???
