Hi - I have aquired a second hand Defy and installed a GiffGaff sim. I can make calls, access the internet etc but I can't download any apps. I understand that I should have an app for Google Play but I am unable to get it on my phone. I have an icon for Market - but any attempt to obtain any app or Google play itself results in failure - any ideas?

It would be required to set up a Googlemail adress to use the Market Place. As well, there is an option which barrs downloads of apps on mobile internet and only allows it over WIFI. I assume with Giffgaff, you are on unlimited internet, so go here to activate downloads via mobile internet:
Settings--> Data manager--> data saver--> untick data saver
The update to Google Play will be offered soon after that.
Hope that helps, let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks Nicole but still no joy. There was already a google mail address in "other accounts" and I have tried to include my own gmail address but I always get the message "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server" even when using wifi.
Is it worth setting the "factory defaults" and set the phone up from scratch?

This error message means that the phone cannot synchronise with the Googleserver for an unknown reason. It would be best indeed to factory reset the Defy and to set up everything from scratch.
Also, when you set up your Gmail account, go to the menu and tap on the Gmail icon, not on the Email icon. You could do that in theory, but it is much more comfortable to use the pre installed Gmail app.
Let me know how it goes.
