Droid 2 Update soon hopefully???

2011-03-15, 20:48 PM

Okay, the last firmware update was October 28, that was 4 and a half months ago and we're working on 5.  Why hasn't there been a single update?  I'm not concerned so much with Gingerbread, I'd much rather just have the bugs fixed with the Droid 2 right now.  The phone came out on August 12th and it has quite a few problems with it.  People keep saying "wait for Matt to post a sticky", well....everyone has been waiting for nearly 5 months.

And we'll be waiting another five months at least.

Matt has posted on the D2G forum that an update is being tested internally, so something for the Global will eventually happen.  I'm hopeful the D2 gets one too, but I've not heard of anything being in the works. - MarkC

The D2 is the redheaded stepchild of the Motorola Android family, the one locked up in the attic and never discussed openly.

yep, unfortunately this phone is gone from the radar. I was so excited when it came out, but moto has moved on to other projects. The xoom works great since it has no moto software on it (email), but I think they just gave up on us. Kind of sad because I love their hardware, but I will definetly think twice about buying a phone from moto again.

What bothers me is how soon these phones are outdated.... its almost like they're already outdated by the time you by them....and drop $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Similar to the halftime show with Ozzy Osborne and Justin Bieber Advertising 4G , 5G, 6G Technolgy...

I understand that these phones have a limited life. What bothers me with the D2 though, is it was released in August 2010 and then by November 2010 was EOLed so Moto could concentrate on the D2G. Most cell phones at least get six months to a year before they are EOLed and cast aside. Our phones have been cast aside before they'd even been out for six months. Meanwhile, Moto continues to support the original, which came out almost two years ago, Droid with software patches.

Could Moto even be bothered to issue software patches to get rid of the problem where the D2 doesn't awaken from Sleep Mode when the power button is pressed and the problem where it loses its data connection randomly? Probably not!

The very least they could do is allow us to unlock the bootloader so we could load Gingerbread on these phones ourselves if we want to. If Moto no longer cares about the D2, what harm is there in allowing us to unlock the bootloader and do as we please?

If Motorola has really ended update support for the original Droid 2, then I won't be buying a motorola device for quite a few years if ever.  I'd much rather buy the next major HTC phone from verizon (once my contract is up of course) if that's how motorola is going to treat their customers.

Matt should come post here and tell us whether or not the Droid 2 will ever receive another update, a release date isn't required.  I just want to know if the phone has been cast aside or not.

The decision to be cast aside would be Verizon's (not Motorola's) and they apparently have.  You can get a D2 Global or a D2 R2D2 model from Verizon Online, but the plain D2 is gone.  - MarkC

Motorola should still supply updates for the people who bought the original D2 for the duration of our contracts.
