Cracked Screen but phone still works

2012-03-06, 21:26 PM

So - one of my dumb animals knocked my phone off a table (which they weren't supposed to be on in the first place) and it landed on the table foot (brass) face down and cracked the screen. The crack is down near the bottom (not on main viewing screen). Although the phone still works great, the crack is driving me crazy, and would anticipate it getting bigger at some point. I have the Verizon full replacement warranty, but don't really want a refurb as my BIONIC works perfect and don't want to get one someone returned that wasn't.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Just don't think Verizon will do anything except give me a refurb, and I don't have an upgrade coming for sometime.

If you want to keep the same phone, I recommend you send it off to Motorola for repair.  Their turn around time is good.  As a precaution, I would backup all of the information on your phone and disable your Google account on the phone prior to shipping  it out for repair.    --- Dan

you could send it in to Motorola to have them replace the screen out of warranty, but that would mean you'd be without your phone for a week. I'm in the same boat with my Xoom. I dropped it and cracked the screen, but I really don't want to be without it while it's repaired...

If you're handy you could try it yourself. I know the parts are available as well as a full breakdown

of the phone.

The warranty cost from Verizon isn't much different than what you'll pay moto and get to keep your phone,

I'd probably send it off to the experts. I keep an old phone around just in case but be aware, if you

use a 3g only phone while yours if getting fixed you'll need a new sim card to re-activate your bio.

Order the digitizer glass and the adhesive and repair it yourself. If you are somewhat handy with small tools, the Bionic is a relatively easy phone to repair. I have replaced the glass on 1 of my Bionics and it only takes about 15 minutes. Just make sure you are in a dust free environment and be sure to take the light shielding pads off of your old glass.

Did you pay for your phone with a credit card? Many cards have automatic protection plans that cover theft or accidental damage. I was able to get full reimbursement from Mastercard for the replacement of a cracked screen. Most of these plans do have time limits. My plan covered up to 90 days after purchase.

Wife has the BIONIC now ( I used her upgrade for a RAZR MAXX). The screen ended up not being cracked but a scratch with marring that made it appear that way. Took it to a friend in the auto glass industry - buffed it out and looks good as new.
