Time/Date wrong after 4.4.2 update

2014-05-27, 0:55 AM

Bizarre problem. 4.4.2 installed last week. Update appeared to be ok. But, now time and date are wrong. Time is 3hrs ahead of normal and date is 1/11/2014!! Plus date and time cannot be changed whether you toggle "Automatic data & time" in Settings or not. This is obviously preventing most data usage on the phone.

I resorted to a factory reset as well as Cache deletion in recovery mode. No luck. Also tried toggling airplane mode etc.

Anyone seen this or can suggest a course of action? Phone is basically a coaster at this point.

Hello lcol8548,

This truly is a bizarre issue and you are the only Droid RAZR Maxx HD owner to date (to my knowledge) that has reported this issue. I am surprised that the FDR and clearing the cache did not resolve this issue. The only other suggestion I would make (prior to servicing) is installing a date/time application like this one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.ntpsync. The application (WITHOUT root) will allow you to poll the NTP service and see if the phone is connecting successfully. If the NTP connection is good, then it should be receiving the correct network date and time. I cannot explain why you are unable to deselect the "Automatic date & time" option and assign those values manually.

Since this happened immediately after the update was applied, can you please tell me the following (under Settings -> About Phone): System Version, Kernel version and Build number?

I'm having the same problem after the 4.4.2 update..  Noticed this morning that clock on phone is 3 hours behind.  Went to settings and set time zone from Mountain to Eastern and still won't change time displayed.

Downloaded that NTPSync app and it reports time is the same.  So tower issue?

My System Version is  182.46.10.XT926.Verizon.en.US,   Kernel Version is  3.4.42-ga67c4 , Build number is KDA20.62-10

Thanks

Burnsieman

Is Mountain your correct time zone and you changed the zone to see if the time would change?  Or did the phone set itself to the wrong zone?

It should be eastern time for me.  It had changed itself to Arizona time (i.e. Mountain)  I was able to toggle it back to Eastern in the settings but time still won't display Eastern time even after i reboot.

Well, that explains the 3 hour difference.  Arizona is Mountain Time, but Mountain Time, along with all the other time zones in the U.S. except Arizona, observes Daylight Saving Time.  Arizona time does not observe DST, so instead of the standard two hours behind Eastern, it's three.

But that doesn't explain why it happened.  It may, though, suggest the possibility that the problem has a location-based component.

Thanks for all responses. Sorry to hear I'm not the only one. Unfortunately I am not able to install apps (at least from Play Store) since the date/time problem is preventing server access. Most apps requiring data are non-functional. Is there a way to install NTPsync without using playstore? I can set the timezone effectively skewing the time but the date is fixed at 1/12/2014 and cannot be changed manually.

My system info appears to be same as Burnsieman:

System Ver: 182.46.10.XT926.Verizon.en.US

Android Ver: 4.4.2

Kernal Ver: 3.4.42-ga67e2c4

Build Ver: KDA20.62-10

Follow-up to docbrown's suggestion, I used clocksync in rootless mode and it is picking up correct  time from NTP server.

Could the date/time sync problem be related to a bad SIM card?

@lcol8548,

Yes, it is possible that a bad SIM card could affect the ability for your phone to accurately determine it's geographic location. It just seems too coincidental to me that the date and time became inaccurate following the upgrade. If your SIM is experiencing issues, they should have been present before the upgrade as well. Having your provider swap out the SIM would be the easiest way to rule out that issue.

Since your phone can reach the NTP server, there must be some connectivity issue after the upgrade (could be the SIM or a corrupt upgrade install).
