Both sim & sd card not working

2013-05-17, 11:58 AM

About a month ago I had a situation with my Razr where there was a red line thru both the phone bars & sd card icon on the notification bar.  Neither the phone nor the sd card worked.  I force rebooted (power+vol down) the phone, still the same.  Called Verizon, they did a few troubleshooting steps with me then were ready to replace my phone with a CLN.  I said let's try one more thing, I turned the phone off, removed & reinserted both the SIM & sd cards and restarted.  That brought everything back to normal.  It lasted about month then last night it happened again.  The reseat of the cards worked again.  Anyone else have this issues?   Any ideas?   Thanks.

Stupid question, I know, but let's get it out of the way:  are you sure that both cards are properly seated?  After they feel seated, you need to use your fingernail to press down and hear/feel a click into place.

Only stupid question is the one unasked smiley

Yes, both were clicked into place.  The phone was working for over a year the first time this happened.  The door to the card slots wasn't opened.  I just got the two red icons and the phone stopped working.  After reseating and clicking them into place, the phone worked for another month, now a repeat of the problem.  I had to push them in to unseat them to get them to pop out, that tells me they were still in place when the problem reoccured.  Strange thing is both cards stop working at once.  If it was a connection problem I would think only one would give problems at a time.

it is possible that both went bad. i know it seems unllikely but if it were me i would do 2 things:

1. go to Verizon store and get a new sim card since this is easy to do unless there is not a store near you.

2. try another SD card

doing this would verify if it was the phone or the cards.

Intermittent failures are the hardest to troubleshoot.

The likelihood that both cards failed at the same time twice is statistically quite low.

As the problem has returned, I would take VZ up on their offer.

Maybe moisture on that side of the phone?  Or static electricity?

This is weird...

Both are real possibilites and yet I would not bother to troubleshoot either if a replacement is in the offing.

The former could also prevent warranty coverage, if it fell under a water damage exclusion. surprise

Replacement of the VZ sim should be free and is easy, the SD card on the other hand would not typically be covered by VZ.

I agree about not worth the bother to troubleshoot.  It's just a puzzle...

The phone has never been wet ... Only sweaty hands but never exposed to liquid.  I think the next time I'm in the mall I will stop by vzw & replace the SIM card.  Worth a try.  The sd card is mine, purchased at Costco, so vzw won't cover it.

The exchange by Verizon is not a 100% sure thing.  The phone was 13.5 months old when I first called about this issue.  The tech said she was pretty sure she could get the replacement approved but all she did was note it in my account since we got it working with the card reseat.  If replacing the SIM fails, I'll call again and reference the original case.  Hopefully they are still willing to swap it out.

When this happened last night, I used the phone to check e-mail, put it back in its pouch/case and put it on the coffee table.  An hour later I tried to use it and found the red slashes on the status bar.  The phone wasn't touched by man nor beast (or water) during that hour.  Yes crystallet, it's a puzzle.

I figured it out!  The dog walked by, caught the scent of your sweaty palms, licked the phone, and shorted out the card slots.

You'll break my heart when you tell me you don't have a dog. frown

Good luck with the new SIM, which should be easy to get.  The problem will come in if the phone decides on an encore performance, and receives signal only for a month.

Let us know what happens.  smiley
