Recommended Security App?

2013-04-17, 21:02 PM

I've been haggling with my own paranoia, and am considering installing one of the free mobile security applications.  Please discuss your experiences (slowdowns, battery drain, lockups, etc.) if you've used any of the free apps?

Avast sounds OK https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.avast.android.mobilesecurity&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5hdmFzdC5hbmRyb2lkLm1vYmlsZXNlY3VyaXR5Il0.

Lookout sounds OK https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.lookout&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5sb29rb3V0Il0.

AVG sounds OK https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.antivirus&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5hbnRpdmlydXMiXQ..

Kaspersky sounds OK but they apparently try to upgrade you to $15 per year https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.kms&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5rbXMiXQ..

Norton is trialware and it costs around $30 per year for the full featured app.

McAffee is 14 day trialware and costs around $30 per year for the full featured app.

I've used Lookout for years and upgrade to Lookout Premium early last year.  I find it completely unobtrusive but effective.  The interface is elegant and I like the backup and missing device features.  I haven't used any other security software on any of my Android platforms so I can't compare it to anything else.  But when something works and never bothers me, I tend to stick with it!  Hope this helps.

I use Comodo Mobile Security.  It's FREE and they don't hassle you to upgrade.  It offers a full suite of features, some of which other services charge for.  I doubt you will find a better free Antivirus suite anywhere.  You can find it on Google Play, just search for "Comodo Mobile Security," they even offer a free anti-theft app.

I use the free Lookout.  No slowdowns, battery drains, it has a missing device feature, and a feature that will automatically save the last known location of your device if it looks like the battery is going to drain completely.  It just sits in the notifcation bar and scans every download quickly before installation.

Other people in this forum swear by AVG.

I have no experience with Norton on a device, but I abandoned it on computers years ago because it embedded itself in too many places in the system and it became virtually impossible to completely uninstall it.  It's a pity, because when it first launched oh so many years ago, it was indispensible.  Now it's intrusive, but again, I don't know if it's that way on a handheld device.

I've used the free versions of Lookout and Avast with great performance by both.  I liked the anti-theft features with Avast but swapped to AndroidLost thanks to recommendations here.      No experience with any others, but I'm learning toward firewalling apps as well the next time around.

I use two, AVG and Comodo, both on my laptops/desktops and also on my phones.  For a desktop, Comodo has one of the best firewall protections I personally have ever reviewed.  They both have a myriad of great extra functions.   BTW, both are the free versions, and in the case of AVG I've used the free version since they made it available for PC's.       --- Dan

Thanks wolfe69, but Comodo is incompatible with my wife's Google Nexus 7 tablet and I don't want to use one solution on my RAZR MAXX and another on the Nexus 7.

Oooohhhh...another parameter!  Lookout runs exactly in the same non-obtrusive manner on my N7.

Thanks for the input on Lookout crystallet.  It's one of a couple that I'm leaning towards.

I've used Norton AntiVirus, Norton Utilities, Norton SystemWorks and most recently Norton Internet Security over many years and never found them to be as intrusive as some reviewers did.  I've recommended and  installed Norton 360 on a few friends' computers because it's use is a no-brainer for those not interested in tweaking.  I've never heard any negative comments from them either.

I think that you would find that the most recent versions of NIS are light on resources, quite transparent and highly effective.  Regarding uninstallation, the Norton Removal Tool does a fine job if necessary.  I used it once a few years ago when I was experimenting.

I'm using AVG, the only thing I don't like is after updating an app, it does hang a bit while "checking" the app.  Otherwise, no issues.
