Anybody with a moto actions not working? (Approach

2015-01-27, 23:27 PM

So I noticed that my moto action (approach) stopped working on my phone.

I know some people hate this feature because it seems to wake up the phone unnecessarily, but in terms of impact to battery it's minuscule to none.

I actually like this feature because using the power button to wake up the phone seems rather inconvenient after having gotten used to the approach feature.

The problem is that it suddenly stopped working for me. I know that people are going to ask if I enabled this in the moto actions menu, it's definitely turned on. I rebooted the phone several times with it on and off. None of those measures have worked.

I knew that there were IR transmitters and a sensor combination that made this trick work so I started to look at the phone with the camera on my Nexus 7 (all phone cameras are sensitive to IR wavelength).

It turns out that the wave function works on moto actions. I could clearly see the three IR transmitters on when I go to try out the wave function (viewed through Nexus 7 camera - not visible to my eyes). Those 3 IR transmitters turn off when I exit the "try" mode. (3 IR transmitters are at top right and both corners on the bottom)

My wife's phone approach function works (she has the same phone - Droid Turbo), and I can clearly see the three transmitters on at all times. When I approach my wife's phone, the screen wakes up and displays the clock. On my phone, the three transmitters are not on - but they turn on when the phone rings (in preparation for the wave detection I presume).

Would you guys have any idea how I fix this? I know this is not a hardware fault. Something is interfering with moto actions from working correctly. Someone suggested that I re-install moto actions in an effort to fix any configuration issues, but I can't remove and install moto actions on my phone.

Does anybody have any suggestions debugging this issue?

Also this might be related - when I get a text message, etc. the screen doesn't seem to turn on. I have moto display enabled also so it should wake up the phone, but the screen remains blank.

You could try settings > apps > Moto Actions clear data. Hope that helps.

I tried it, no go. I rebooted after clearing data as well. The IR transmitters are not on and does not turn on the screen with a hand approach.

OK, how about going into the app drawer, select Moto, tap the settings icon in the upper right hand corner, then tap Display on the lower right. Make sure Moto Display is checked. You can also select what  to display if you tap learn more and keep hitting next until you come to a screen where you have the option to select apps.

Yes, I thought that might be the problem as well, I made sure moto display is checked and enabled.

By the way, even if I didn't select any apps for moto display, I would expect moto actions approach to turn those IR emitters on, but they are not on. So I think the problem is with moto actions (approach), not moto display.

Just to be sure, I also did a clear cache and clear data for "moto" "moto action" and "moto display" - rebooted and set up again. No difference.. :-(

I read about some people claiming that the Lollipop feature interferes with moto action/display. I think I'm using Google Now launcher - and it updates on a regular basis. I know the moto stuff worked until about last week, maybe an update is interfering with moto?

Have you tried running in safe mode to see if an app is causing a conflict?

I didn't even know a "safe mode" was a thing on my Droid Turbo! OK. I tried it and it didn't work in safe mode. The strange thing is that after rebooting from safe mode into a normal mode, the approach function worked! Approaching hand turned the display on and showed the time. But right after I locked the phone using the power button, it stopped working again! So I know the hardware knows how to do it. Somehow the software is locking it out! Is it possible safe mode doesn't mask all apps? Maybe the thing that is interfering with moto actions is low level software.

I'm starting to think that the problem is maybe moto actions not getting the signal that the display is off?

Have you tried to clear the cache portion on the phone to see if that helps, possibly corrupt data?

Peter,

What I find weird is that it worked one time after booting to safe mode and then going back to normal mode. It got me to thinking. You mention locking the phone with the power button. Have you tried setting Screen lock to None, rebooting the phone and then trying moto actions approach? Just wondering if there may be a screen locking issue to blame here.
