Battery life down since 5.1- sync interval maybe?

2015-07-09, 13:10 PM

Hi gang,

I know that I probably need a FDR in order to cover all my bases but I have found a decrease in battery life since the update, which is surprising due to the gains we should be making due to Project Volta and the switch to ART.

I got to wondering about sync intervals, I seem to recall that they were fairly configurable on an app-by-app basis but now I can find under Account Settings is an option to either Auto SYnc All or to Manually Sync All...and for the Google account there are quite a few that would have to be tapped each time I want to refresh.

Is there was way to change the interval globally? I don't even see it in the app settings themselves. What is the interval anyway? "Auto" doesn't tell me if it is every 10 minutes, hourly, daily, or what.

As always your help is appreciated.

Cheers,

Matt

Matt,

A few thing before you go down the FDR route.

Have you powered off your phone and left it off for at least 10 minutes?

Also re-calibrate the battery. Power off the phone, Charge to 100% and leave it plugged in and off for about an hour. Leave it connected to the charger and power on. Again leave it on plugged in for about an hour. I suspect that will give you the battery life needed.

I use mine for work and sync is set to auto and email to push. I get a full day of moderate use without an issue.

I use the same procedures BobFire mentions and easily get full day+ of moderate use without any issues. yes

Android 5.0 removed the ability to Manually sync and I can't find anything on the interval which it synced automatically. Android 5.1 added back the ability to Manually sync and again I can't seem to find anything on the interweb related, beyond apps that allow you to change the interval, all of which appear to require your phone be rooted. sad

Maybe someone from Motorola can chime in with what the "Auto" setting is actually set to. wink

I also did a system cache clear right after the update. I have been getting the same or better battery life out of the phone. I still can't get 2 days but I am definitely plugging it in at night with more remaining.

Thanks for the replies.

I am easily able to get through a day even now but instead of going to bed with 60% remaining it is usually under 50%. Previously I would seldom top off the battery during the day (I sometimes rest my phone on my Qi pad at work "just because") but yesterday I left work with more than 85% and still dropped quite a bit before bedtime-- and that was with the phone on the Qi charger for a few hours while at work. When I plugged in last night my phone was at 45%.

I will try the recalibration, maybe even the FDR, but I have the exact same apps and habits with 5.1 as I did with 4.4.4 but battery performance is noticeably lower. I still don't have the "power panic" that I had 24/7 with my original Droid Razr but this does seem to be clearly related to the update.

Cheers,

Matt

I've had the same problem since 5.1 was released. The percentage of battery usage for the email app has more than  doubled. In an attempt to trouble shoot the problem I have turned of the sync for each of my email accounts (exchange @ push & IMAP @ 1hr). I'm not sure why but the IMAP account seem to be casing the problem. I've done the battery reset already and was thinking of doing a FDR this weekend.

@Staudie - Have you done anything besides battery calibration? Safe mode or cache clear? Those are less invasive than an FDR.

I've both safe mode and cache clear (app & phone). The email app is always my highest battery usage app by 2-3X percentage.

@Staudie - I would try deleting your email account and recreating it. Sounds like it is hung up.

I went ahead and deleted the account and cleared the phone cache. Here are some pics of what the app has been doing
