Droid X wi-fi unusable after update

2012-02-27, 22:38 PM

The update has made the wi-fi next to unusable. I have removed the Wi-Fi connection and re-entered it. Power cycled the phone, done a battery pull. Nothing fixes the issue. Try running a speed test it either fails consistently with "network communication failure" or the bandwidth is horrendous. I never had such issues before the update. The issue is not only at home even at work. I was wondering if others were seeing such abysmal performance. I have NEVER rooted my phone. I wish I had and switched to community ROM, they seem to be doing a better job than a corporation like Motorola. I just wish Motorola never updated this phone, every update has caused the phones performance to deteriorate. The Droid X could have been a worthy successor to the Droid but Motorola just screwed it up. I have been a loyal motorola and verizon customer for close to 10 years now. When my contract gets done one thing is for certain I will never ever be buying another Motorola device nor will I ever recommend a Motorola device ever again. Releasing half a dozen devices every year is only what Motorola is good at. Keeping the phones working is something they dont care about.

I got the update also and I was at the hospital today (my wife was having surgery) and I was getting bad 3G reception, so I switched to a wireless connection that the hospital provides. My speeds were faster than I get on 3G. I didn't lose the connection one time while using it. When I left the hospital I forgot to turn off wifi, but it switched to 3G without any problems.

I got home, but didn't use my phone for awhile. When I picked up my phone I noticed that it was connected to my home wifi. It was working just fine and it connected by itself. I turned wifi off and 3G connected within a couple of seconds.

Have you tried rebooting your router? You can't do this at work, but you could try this at home. You could also try a factory data reset. Sometimes after an update a factory data reset will help clear problems up that start happening. Hope this helps.

I'm not having any problems either.

I have found that the phone works better at N speeds (I'm using 130 Mbps) than it does with G speeds (54 Mbps). I have always dropped the connection repeatedly at 54 Mbps. No problems at the higher speed.

Re: Droid X wi-fi unusable after update

I have rebooted my home router multiple times and power cycled the device multiple times including battery pulls. The only thing that I havent done is a factory reset. I am running N (150 Mbps) at home and at work it is G (54Mbps).

Apart from this I started seeing that my phone now randomly reboots. During an important international call the phone decided to reboot on its own which is just perfect. Seems like the update hasnt fixed most bugs that existed.

Since I am only left with the option of a factory restore, I had selected encrypted storage. Will things mess up when I do a factory restore?

Try switching your router to G, WPA/WPA2 mixed, instead of N. This is the only way I have ever gotten reliable WiFi with this phone, thru every update since it was released.

I guess I jinxed myself. My wifi was TERRIBLE last night. Kept dropping and when it was there, it was S-L-O-W.

At work I have G network and I have the exact same issue.

Glad to know that I am not the only one with this issue.

My vote is for the factory reset. It's a royal pain, I know, but my phone is now working better than ever since the upgrade!

I guess I have to bite the bullet and do a factory reset. Before I do a reset, an important question I have is that I use encryption of my storage in my phone. Would it work fine without any issue?
