VZW offering early upgrade to Bionic for $249

2011-09-08, 6:01 AM

My upgrade isn't until 4/15/2012 but Verizon is offering upgrades at a reduced price. I just might have to take advantage of the offer. Now I have to decide whether or not to stick with Motorola. I would appreciate opinions of the Bionic as people start to get them. I don't really need to spend another $249 plus tax right now, but it may be worth it.

If you search google news for "droid bionic review" there are in excess of 200 different reviews.

I read a couple and they all seem to be pretty glowing, BUT I don't really think that the kind of day to day reliablity issues that most folks seem to be having are going to show up after playing with the phone for an hour or two and dashing off a review before it's old news.

The exception to the praise seems to be the webtop. The laptop like interface you can plug your phone into is being reported as kludgy and half baked. The whole concept seems flawed IMHO and the novelty isn't cool enough to merit a $300 price point for an accessory, especially in an age of similarly priced tablets and netbooks the can access the same cloud based data and do a better job.

If you live in an area that currently has good 4G coverage (never count on the promise of coverage in the future), you have lots of problems with your DX and you have and the extra dough, I would give it a whirl. But you do have to consider any initial phase of a product cycle is going to have some issues.

I am also curious about whether VZW is going to let us with unlimited data plans keep them through an upgrade cycle. If not I may just outright buy my phones.

I did a mock upgrade last night and it made me "choose" a new data plan. Because I am grandfathered, Unlimited was offered and was the default. But they gave me the choice of switching to 2GB for $30 (LOL).

Where did you see this offer? I couldn't find it.

They emailed it to me.

However, if you log into My Verizon, go to the main home page, click on Droid Bionic by Motorola, click on Learn More it should take you to a page where you can buy it with current two year pricing (without logging in, it's $299).

Looks like the discount is gone now. And here I thought VZW and Moto were doing something nice for the Droid X community so we could upgrade to a phone that actually works.

i just checked over at verizon wireless and on my line i can purchase the bionic for $269.99. It appears that the one year deal is gone have two options. 2 year contract or month to month. I`m not going to buy one though. Replacing a one year old phone is just dumb to me but that`s me.

There's also an offer for a 100 dollar gift card for trading in your old phone.  What's not clear is if they will accept any phone on trade
