I cant say 100% for the Xyboard but when I purchased my original xoom from Best Buy I did not have to get the data plan when I purchased it but it was an option. I did however change to the WiFi only xoom when it was released since the cost difference was a big deal for me. I suggest you give them a call and ask if its a requirment to buy one.

I also want to get the 32GB WiFi version. But so far nothing. I don't need VZN data plan for a tablet I am planning to use at home.
It will be nice if we can get confirmation or not about the device

There has been no mention of a Wifi-only version. You may absolutely purchase a Xyboard without a Verizon contract, but you still need to buy it from a Verizon store. Simply ask for the "full retail" version and pricing. You will not have to do a credit check or sign up for any service.
If you order it from Verizon.com, you will be forced to sign up for a month-to-month contract which you can cancel as soon as the Xyboard ships, but why bother with that when you can get it without that extra step from a Verizon store.

Thanks for the warning but I always double check before buying on craigslist.
I saw it twice already but did not act fast enough
The first one was a 10.1" with 32GB for $500 and I was not interested
The second one was $400 for 8.2" with 32GB, sold fast
I am very confident I am going to get it soon.

What do you know? The WIFI only version is now available for pre-order at Motorola, shipping on 01/18/2012
The price is still high if you ask me but I can wait. The 8.2-inch model will cost $400 and $500 for the 16GB and 32GB versions, respectively, while the 10.1-inch will set you back $500 for the 16GB and $600 for the 32GB—roughly $200 less than what Verizon charges for them without a contract.
