Blurry L170 and L190 monitors due to VGA cable.

2008-05-02, 16:30 PM
On all 17" and 19" LCD monitors my client has purchased from Lenovo (all our hardware is IBM or Lenovo, 250 workstations) the LCDs occasionally shows a shadow behind the image.  The partner company I work for replaced several LCD panels for this problem but every single time the problem returned eventually (because your replacement panels don't ship with new cables but they should).  IBM support (1-800-5058-1855) does not admit this is an issue affecting multiple units, and why would they it would cost someone $, BUT i have determined that replacing the VGA cable that comes with your monitors fixes this EVERY SINGLE TIME.

I have replaced about 10 VGA cables this year because of this issue.  Our end users find this to be incredibly annoying and trust me I hear the complaints about it.  The ones we have replaced (VGA cable) this problem has not returned on any of them.  Often unplugging the VGA cable and reconnecting it will temporarily get rid of this "shadow" behind all items on the screen.

What's up with that?  Anyone else seeing this issue?  Why does unplugging the cable temporarily get rid of this shadow?

Any info would be appreciated.

have you tried the image optimization feature by pressing the button below the green "( << )" icon?

Yes I have tried that, no help at all.  Reconfigured all the various display settings and none of that helped either.

Sometimes even jiggling the VGA cable around gets it back to normal for a few days...but for certain every time that I've seen this "shadow" show up it hasn't been permanently fixed without replacing the VGA cable with an $8 special.  I'd try the DVI connector instead but the onboard card on these Lenovo and IBM desktops only have a 15 pin VGA port.

fwiw, i replaced the VGA cable included with my L220x with a 3' multi-shielded cable and the signal now rivals DVI (which tested back-to-back using my former T61p and advanced mini dock).   since cables and lengths are such a personal decision, i wouldn't expect the included cables with any monitor to be above average by any means.   you definitely get what you pay for.   heck, my 3' cable was $21 so just 1' of this cable costs more than some 10' cables.

if replacing the cables fixes the problem then that's probably the best solution. ;)

One of my theories was that the shielding was inadequate for our environment....hmmmm.

Also got the shadowy lettering and pics on my L190.  Jiggling the VGA cable and blowing air through the vents on back of the monitor fixed the problem (Maybe for the time being only!)

Sounds like the problem is the VGA cables that are coming with the monitors are just crap

I'm not sure it's the cable itself, it could just as likely be the connectors on the end aren't making a full connection and jiggling them pushes the ends together inside the plug.  I have replaced 3 of these VGA cables recently with new ones though myself to resovle this issue.

Are there any problems with the DVI?

I couldn't tell you because there's no DVI port built into the onboard video on the Lenovo Desktops we purchase.  Video cards are too expensive to use in the office.

I'm seeing 2 more of these issues today as well.  Cable swap already fixed one of them.
