External Thinkpad Keyboards?

2008-03-25, 16:14 PM
Hi,

I'm a massive fan of the keyboards on Thinkpad's (who isn't), however when I'm in the office I use an external keyboard.

The standard Lenovo USB keyboards (like most keyboards) don't have the feel or accuracy of the inbuilt keyboard. However I prefer an external display / keyboard when I doing a days work at my desk.

Can anyone recommend an external full size USB keyboard with a 'Thinkpad' feel. Cost is not a major factor.

You want the USB Ultranav keyboard, it has the exact same feel as the T4* keyboard because it basically is one in an external enclosure:

Snife,

Genius - I'd found the one without an external number pad, but missed this. Thanks for pointing this out.

I'm off to order one! You've saved me from the new keyboard I've been given by our purchasing manager, which is like typing on keys sprung with custard! Thanks again.

And for those looking after an even more accurate typing feeling, but a still compact external keyboard, I can highly recommend the SpaceSaver II line of keyboards. - BTW, real keyboard purists will then of course prefer here the older but better typing quality IBM SpaceSaver II than the newer IBM Trackpoint USB Space Saver.

Yeah I keep a SpaceSaver around for when I need to use PS/2 stuff and it is a decent keyboard but after using the UltraNav keyboard for several years as my main keyboard, I just got a new keyboard from Unicomp and I had forgotten how good buckling spring keyboards are:

Not compact and they look like they are from the 1980s but they are really nice to type on.

Well, the Unicomp MightyMouse is more in line of what I meant as a sort of IBM SpaceSaver II (<- scroll down) replacement keyboard, but the original IBM keyboards are still much better here.

However, those who are looking after informations about vintage buckling spring IBM keyboards, might take a look at clickykeyboards.com instead, which also from time to time had some of those rare model M spacesaver keyboards. - I recently saw that a good old IBM model M15 split ergo keyboard (those in the past from Lexmark) had been sold for over > $1500 at ebay USA. No need to say, even I was interested, that this was far out of my price reach. :smileywink:

The UltraNav keyboard has arrived and I'm chuffed. Thanks for the tip Snife.

I'm trying to hunt down one of the Space Saver II keyboards on eBay. Becoming obsessed with keyboards! Might try one of the sprung ones mentioned, I remember using these one Unix machines when I first started out in IT.
