Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 (40AN) 60Hz support

2021-04-15, 15:08 PM

ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 (40AN0135UK)

ThinkPad X1 Yoga 3rd Gen 20LE

2 x Samsung 32UJ590 4K 60Hz monitors

From reading the configurations KB I *think* my dock/laptop combo should support 2 external screens running 3840*2160@60Hz in addition to using the built-in screen however I'm only getting 30Hz.

Is there something I need to change or am I reading the guide wrong?

Dock firmware updated to 3.1.68 and v10017 drivers installed.

Thanks.

You need  to  connect one monitor to the dock's front thunderbolt compatible USB-C port.  When you connect both monitors to the dock's DP/HDMI ports,  the system uses only one  DP1.2 stream for both monitors using MST ( daisy-chain). The USB-C port on the front will configure a second DP1.2 stream for this monitor only.

EDIT: better wording:  of course  MST  uses several independent DP1.2 streams, but they all share the same GPU interface.

The TBT port, enables a stream on a second  GPU interface.

How are you connecting/cabling the monitors to the dock?

If by HDMI, it may explain the 30Hz.

Both are connected via DisplayPort.

The X1 is the i7-8550U version with the UHD620 graphics.

The Docking Station Video Output Configuration table shows 30Hz in your configuration:

USB-C: Just cos it fits don't mean it works.

That worked, 60Hz on both screens.

Thanks again!
