Lenovo thinkpad thunderbolt 3 dock gen 2 dock drops USB on Linux

2020-07-12, 1:49 AM

I am using ThinkPad x1 carbon laptop 7 gen with dual boot Windows/Ubuntu 20.04 with lenovo thinkpad thunderbolt dock gen 2. I have updated all drivers/firmware on Windows for both laptop and dock. I also set authorization option to "No Security" in bios. The dock seems working good on Windows. However on Ubuntu It starts working normally but after some time USB (keyboard, mouse) stops working. When this happens a monitor connected to dock still works fine. If I reconnect the cable - it fixes the problem for a while (about 10 min) and then USB drops again. Does anyone know how to fix that?

This happened to me, with 1 year old Dock firmware (don't remember the version), and a P1 Gen2.

Upgrading the Dock firmware to V3.1.66 caused the Dock to stop working in Ubuntu 20.04 - I cannot login with the Dock connected, and if I connect it, the USB hub is not detected (so keyboard/mouse/audio/network do not work), one of the displays does not work and there are tons of errors in dmesg.

Example errors:

In Windows, if I lock Windows and the screen is turned off - then I sometimes cannot resume the session - screens remain black, and I am forced to restart.

I am asking support to have it replaced.

For me that's a bit different. My dock start working just fine and drops connection after some random time. I believe that must be some firmware problem because Windows does not have the problem at all.

Have you authorized the dock in Thunderbolt settings (under Settings > Privacy > Thunderbolt)?

My USB on the dock only works in Ubuntu 20.04 if I have not reset or powered off the dock since the last time it was used in Windows, but it doesn't drop if it is working.  But I am not using a keyboard or mouse on the dock because they won't work for startup/disk passwords, I have them plugged into the laptop.  But I have 3 external drives on the dock and they don't drop out.

I'm also having the same problems using Ubuntu 20.04. Mouse and keyboard freeze after a while and external monitor keeps working fine. All of them are connected to the dock.

Is this ever going to be fixed? Seems to be the consensus that it's kernel/firmware bug. Pretty much BS to have a dock retailing for almost $400 where almost all of it is useless in Linux.
