Screens flickering with Thunderbolt 3 Dock

2019-01-24, 10:29 AM

At the office we have many problems with flickering screens using a Lenovo Thinkpad X1 20KG and Thunderbolt 3 Docks.

We use Windows 10, dualscreens screens (also Lenovo). We have tried many things already, like updating Windows, installing new BIOS/firmware (laptop and dock), tried longer USB-c kabel, but nothing worked.

We also had this problem before with older Thinkpad X1s and ProDocks. Those problems were eventually solved by installing a new firmware for the dock and BIOS for the laptop, but at the moment there is no solution.

Also, i feel like none of the Lenovo support replies take this issue serious, as you can find thousands of simular problems, dating back many years!

I have the same problem with my brand new Lenovo Yoga C930 and the Thunderbolt 3 Dock. After connecting the notebook to the dock, the notebook screen flickers. Have tried updating notebook drivers, dock drivers, and until now no luck. Hope that Lenovo finds a solution, because it is frustating the see the screen flickering the whole work day.

Same here. Its clearly a "software / firmware" problem, my dock was changed but the problem persists. I found that if I have an application with a white background on the monitor, the flicker is almost gone, comes once in a while but rarelly.

Yeah it has something to do with whatever is on screen as well, though i dont think its a problem with the videodrivers.

I just had the flickering happen again, with some sort of java application. Will see if i can find out more.

I have tried several combinations:

  VGA + HDMI
  VGA  + DP

  HDMI + DP

  DP + DP

Always with the same problem.

Hi All,

I have a t580 with the thunderbold dock and when I connected two monitors to the dock my built-in display started flashing.

I fixed it by going into 'control panel' 'power options' 'edit Plan settings' and cranking the brightness for the 'on battery' setting to the highest setting.

The flashing stopped.

Hope this helps others.

I have replaced my dockintstation and laptop, installed the new firmware and STILL have flickering screens. Not as often as before, maybe 1 or 2 times a day, but still.

I now have found 4 docks with serious problems. Are these from the same batch? The serial numbers look very similar:

zbk076d0 18/06

zbk07694 18/06

zbk076bb 18/06

zbk0762s 18/06

Re: Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen 2 not compatible with X1 Carbon 6th Gen?

2019-04-04, 20:02 PM

We have deployed about 15 X1C6 type 20KH laptops with the 40AC0135US thunderbolt 3 docks. Most of them are stable most of the time but intermittently several of them will not work various functions such as mouse and keyboard or video to a monitor or even starting the laptop when the dock has been plugged or unplugged while the laptop was powered on or asleep. I have made sure that all the latest Lenovo updates are installed as well as all the latest Windows updates. I have had to try various things to get them to work together including; powering down the laptop by holding the power button and pulling the power cable from the dock then plugging it all back in and starting it up, a couple of times I have had to pull the power from the dock and also press the reset button on the laptop and then plug it all back in to get it to work. Other times the keyboard and mouse have to be re-enabled along with the port in the dock in the thunderbolt software and sometimes I have had to remove the thunderbolt objects from the device manager and then restart the machine to get things working again. All in all it is getting very frustrating for not only the users but for me as well.

In the shopping section of the website it shows the dock as being a valid accessorie for this model X1C6 but in another section of the website I found specs for the dock and th 20KH X1C6 is not included in the supported devices list.

Does anyone have any ideas for a longer lasting solution for these issues?

Thanks.

problem with connection between Lenovo Carbon X1 6th gen and Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock station.

2019-04-05, 12:05 PM

Hello,

I have a problem with connection between Lenovo Carbon X1 6th gen and Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock station.

The problem is – every 3rd or sometimes 2nd connection, computer won’t recognize the usb devices which one is plugged in to dock station (mouse, camera, keyboard)

Also PC runs into Windows10 blue screen with scode DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION.

All drivers was installed from official Lenovo or Intel homepage, also from Lenovo Vantage.

  • Thunderbolt connection is enabled for dock station for always and without any approvals.
  • Dock station firmware is upgraded to the latest
  • Lenovo Vantage driver check says there is no updates
  • Windows Update is up to date
  • I tried different bios settings for thunderbolt3 and there is no results

I am waiting for answer as soon as possible, this problem repeats with several Carbon X1 6th gen laptops and with 4 different docking stations.

I have the exact same issue.

Laptop: Lenovo X1 Carbon 6th Generation
Dock: 40AC
Serial Number: *
Operating System: Windows 10 1803
Issue:
- BSOD DRIVER_VERIFIER_DMA_VIOLATION
- Screen flickering
- We have a dual monitor set up + laptop, sometimes both monitors shut off and all windows (programs) shuffle to the laptop

Things I've done:
- Swapping a 40AC with a 40AF dock and so far no issues with BSOD/flickering
- Swapped 40AC with 40AC, issue persists
- No issues when laptop is used without dock
- Lenovo Vantage - all critical drivers have been updated

I had this issue as well.  I was using the HDMI port to connect to my monitor and was seeing a flicker every hour or so.  It was suggested to me to try the Displayport connector instead.  This seems to have cleared up the problem and not seeing the flicker anymore.

Same Problem.

X1 Extreme

Thunderbolt Workstation dock 235w

2 dell monitors, Display port

all firmware/dirve up to date.

win10-1809

in BIOS thunderbolt security settings set according to manual.

sometime disconnects dock cable from laptop and reconnect will do the trick, but most of time that **bleep** flickering problem comes hourly.

Re: Screens flickering with Thunderbolt 3 Dock

Replaced my laptop, replaced the TB3 dock...nothing worked. Replaced the displayport cabels; this was the solution!...for a few weeks.

Yesterday, my laptop wouldn't wake up properly to show me the logon screen; one screen was black, the other blue, mouse was working on both screens though. After a laptop restart, everything worked again. This morning, i connected my laptop to the dock and turn everything on. Both my screens will not show any picture! Took me 10 minutes to fix this after several reboots and disconnecting all the power chords.

So Lenovo...are we gonna fix this problem any time soon?
