TB3 Gen2 3 external displays

2019-10-10, 8:30 AM

Setup

  • Lenovo T490s laptop (sc1)
  • Lenovo TB3 Gen 2 Docking station
  • Dell U2415 (sc2)
  • Dell U2415 (sc3)
  • Dell U2413 (sc4)

I would like to be able to close the lid from the laptop and use the 3 external screens with 1920 x 1200 resolution

If I read the documentation correctly, I should be able to do it

https://support.lenovo.com/gb/en/solutions/pd029622#ThinkPad%20Thunderbolt%203%20Dock%20Gen%202

If I use the laptop's built-in screen (sc1) with 2 screens (sc2 and sc3) connected to DisplayPorts 1 and 2 it works fine.

If I try to connect sc2 and sc3 to the DisplayPorts (1 and 2) and close the lid (sc1), it also works fine.

Now if I connect:

  • sc1 closed
  • sc2 to DP1
  • sc3 to DP2
  • sc4 to HDMI

the 3rd screen is detected by Windows but only allows a max resolution of 1440 x 576 (or 576 x 1440 in Portrait mode).

If I try to reduce the resolution on sc2 and sc3 I still cannot increase the resolution in sc4.

If I use the other HDMI port in the dock, sc4 is not detected.

If I use the HDMI port from the laptop, sc4 is also not detected.

It seems very strange to me that this is not possible on this newer model. I was able to do that with the older laptop and dock (P50 and Workstation dock) using 2 DP and VGA. I don't need 4k resolution, just the 3 screns @ 1920 x 1200

Do you know if this is possible at all?

Re: TB3 Gen2 3 external displays

Hi,

Welcome to Lenovo forums.

May I know which USB-C port in T490s you have attached your dock? As I know,  there are 2 USB-C ports in T490s, one is USB C port which marked charging icon and one is Thunderbolt port. if you want to support 3 external monitors with 1920 resolution. you must attach your dock to the system's TBT3 port.

I have tried T490s+ TBT3 Gen2 Dock with 3 external monitors on my hand. When I attach dock to the system's TBT3 port (not marked charging  ) and close the lid from the laptop,  it can support one monitor with 3840*2160@30Hz + two monitors with 1920*1080@60Hz.

But if I attach my dock to the system's USB C charging port. i can meet the same problem as yours.  Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen2 could support DP1.4 resolution, video resolution depends on system side.

Hope it's useful for you.

Hi @xiaomeng,

THanks for that. I feel quite stupid now but that did the trick. Thanks a lot for your help.

Any TBT3 training course that you would recommend me? :)
