ThinkPad X240 and Pro Dock - external display count?

2021-04-28, 22:14 PM

Am I reading this chart correctly in that when the laptop is docked I can only use the DisplayPort OR DVI, not both, to extend to two external monitors? But I can use the laptop mini DisplayPort for one external display and then the DVI or DisplayPort on the dock for another?

Hello Hoochee!

Welcome to community forums

According to the product spreadsheet of your computer, the computer can support up to 2 external monitors through DP via mDP cable(3840 x 2160 @ 30Hz) and VGA(1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz)

For the docking station, that I need to check because according to this link: https://accessorysmartfind.lenovo.com/#/search?categoryL1Name=Docking&categoryL2Names&keyword=&pageIndex=1&pageSize=40&query=&subSeriesList=22TP2TX2400&systemId=22TP2TX2400,

there is no compatible Lenovo docking station for this machine.

I offer my sincere apologies - the laptop is an X250, not X240. I mistyped in the title.

I see. The laptop can support up to two external monitors from DP via mDP cable(3840 x 2160 @ 60Hz) and VGA(1920 x 1200 @ 60Hz)

There is only one compatible docking station for the X250 which is the Thinkpad Hybrid USB-C with USB-A Dock and you can check it here: https://accessorysmartfind.lenovo.com/#/search?categoryL1Name=Docking&categoryL2Names&keyword=&pageIndex=1&pageSize=40&query=&subSeriesList=22TP2TX2500&systemId=22TP2TX2500

Regards

Sorry, but this is nonsense. The X240 and X250 work fine with the Pro Dock (40A1) or Ultra Dock (40A2). IIRC both docking solutions are even described in the user manuals of the respective systems. They may no longer be available from Lenovo, but you can easily find them on Ebay  for reasonable prices.

It's also listed as compatible in the link @ Hoochee put in his first post.

To answer his questions,  yes to both.  The two digital ports on the Port Dock are exclusive. Only one port will work. You may want to consider an  Ultra Dock, if you want to be able to connect two digital displays.

And yes, you can still connect a display to the system's  DP port.

Tech-Savvyness does not replace reading the fine manual.
