Re: Thunderbolt 3 Workstation not working any more (after firmware update?)

2019-02-05, 14:22 PM

Same problem here....

ThinkPad X1 Extreme with 40AN0230US Dock

Dock firmware was updated last night by a team member that works remote.
I have been told dock is now non-responsive and the team member is unable to work...

Screen indicates success, but it appears dock is DOA (does nothing).

re: Auto update of second dock

I am considering overnighting a spare dock to the team member.
Please clarify the above comment regarding "auto updating of second dock"

If the laptop is plugged in to a second dock - does it automatically update (and thus potentially break) the second dock?

Terry

We lost two 40AN230's yesterday. FW 3.1.52

Actually the 40AC Docks are not affected. We have two of them running and they are still working. They also have a different range of firmware version.

Dear jbNewMill,

So what you are saying that the software that is installed on the PC acts now like a virus. Correct? If I plug in a working dock, even without manually accepting the Firmware Update (via Lenovo Vantage; btw: automatic updates are disabled) => the working dock will be bricked.

Do you know if this "virus like" behavior comes from a) software installed in Windows, or b) comes from software e.g. in PCs BIOS? If a), it means that doing a fresh Windows install WITHOUT installing the problematic piece of software from Lenovo Vantage => this should not brick the new dock. If b), then the situation is worse.

Virus-like behavior would be quite accurate, as it DOES seem to spread to any 40AN0230US(EU) plugged into it. Wheather this comes from Windows or the BIOS, I do not know. I am on the phone with support now, but they have no idea. I'm trying to get some sort of contact information for their Engineering team (here's for hoping)

No resolution from Tech support whatsoever (neither hardware nor software). Has anyone else heard anything?

I contacted support again after they closed off my ticket. They told me that it would have to be sent for repair and they would send me the RMA details.

That was 5hrs ago and still no email.

Who knows... Lenovo support used to be excellent, however this is a shambles.

Re: Thunderbolt 3 Workstation not working any more (after firmware update?)

Have the same issue -- dock is completely bricked (except provides power).  First I noticed that the ethernet was not functional.  Then I shutdown and restart (2 two times).  HDMI ports were working w/ two external monitors but no ethernet.

I proceeded to shutdown and then unplugged the ethernet cable to the dock -- then unplugged the power and restarted (now power button on dock was not working).  Started the laptop w/ laptop's power button. Now only laptop starts -- no ethernet, no external monitor ... essentially, dock is not working, although it is getting power (white light is continuously on).

Very frustrated w/ update -- is there a solution?

(Expansion of my previous post)

My dock behavior is the same - white light is on continuously.

Had the same issue happen with my dock (40AN) - Lenovo updated the firware and that's it. Power stayed on and nothing else worked. Lenovo support didn't even question it when I called it into premier support, they're simply going to RMA it, but it's backordered until 2/14. Fortunately, I had another one, but this is a mess for anyone needing to use the dock all the time.

For anyone concerned about it auto-updating, go into the Lenovo system update and turn off the auto-updates before connecting the dock to the system.
