Re: Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - Bricked after FW Update

2019-02-23, 8:03 AM
We had similar issues when both cables were connected to the dock. I had to completely disconnect the original cable (the one with the power) and connect 230w power supply directly to the laptop and the extra cable to the front of the dock - then everything got recognized.

In my case it also mattered which tb3 port I'm using on the laptop (have P52), so may be try different ports.

I tried this connecting to the front port using diffrent Thunderbolt Cables and my X1.

No luck :( Dock is not recognized on both ports.

Firmeware 3.1.53 is now available to download from Lenovo.  I noticed that you must un-zip the file into a folder you have already created. If you attempt to let the file un-zip using the current name Lenovo used, you'll run into an error.

Mine installed, updated and my Display Port is not working with my X1 Thinkvision Gen 1.  Sigh...  seriously?

Follow the link above and downloaded the firmware. Installed manually on my dock, which fortunately failed to upgrade previously, and it seemed everything is working okay. Tried to install the Windows driver but the installer said already I already have the same version installed although the driver itself was just released today Feb 27??!! How is it possible?

The help file indicates that the update should over-rite the driver, simply as a precaution. I would recommend you try again from a clean boot. And, before you launch the installer, right click and launch as Administrator.  This ensures there aren't issues for the application as it attempst to re-install the Dock Driver.  I will say this, I sat and watched what appeared to be something stuck in a loop for a very long time.  Eventually after a good 2-3 minutes, the button to Update was finally available. Good luck.

Re: Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - Bricked after FW Update

Hello,

I've tried everything, but nothing works. Everytime it says "Can't not found Tunderbold 3 Dock". I had connect the Docking with USB C cable on front and back connector....same problem.

Can you tell me where I can initiate hardware change?

Thx

Re: Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - Bricked after FW Update

Hello,

I have the very same issue with the docks "not recognized" by the computers making it impossible to install the new firmware. I got a hold of Lenovo support and this was the reponse I got but I have not tried the exact steps just yet:

"If you have gone through the following steps and the dock is still not detected. I can ask that Lenovo SWAT engineers send a box for you to send
in one unit to include the dock and they can work on repair. Please let me know if this is an option for you.
It is recommended that you disconnect the dock and remove power to it. Set aside.
Uninstall the Thunderbolt software present on your system via the Control Panel>Programs and Features.
Restart the system even if not prompted. Download and install the latest version 3.1.53. Restart the system once again, even if not prompted.
Reconnect the power cable to the Thunderbolt 3 dock and then reconnect the Thunderbolt 3 cable from the dock to your system.
You should be prompted to authenticate/approve the dock. Please approve the device as shown in the example using the "Always Connect option.
It is possible the approval prompt won't pup up automatically. If that is the case just proceed with testing any non-functioning ports in the dock again."

I am still engaged with the support team and will continue to post any other troubleshooting options they share. Here is the link to the new firmware that's replaced the broken one:

3.1.53 is the new firmware https://support.lenovo.com/us/en/solutions/pd500252

Re: Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - Bricked after FW Update

2019-03-04, 17:36 PM

I have reluctantly returned my Thunderbolt 3 2nd Gen Dock. This is the 2nd one I've used. While I was able to successfully update the Firmware, there were too many small issues that have yet to be resolved to make this a reliable device.

1. When resuming from Sleep, the attached system and display rarely or won't recover, leading to a disconnect and I have to use a PIN to reset the device (X1 Yoga 3rd Gen)

2. When booting, the device often will not recognize the external display (even with all the hints/tips provided here and the web)

This is disheartening, but I find solace in the fact this appears to be an industry problem. I have resorted to plugging everything in to my laptop instead. First world problem.

Lenovo, good luck. Your prior docking solutions were almost always 100% reliable. This is the first time in 30+ ThinkPads and probably 20+ dock's that I've given up. I'll follow along here in hopes a breakthrough happens and I'll re-order.
