Re: Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - Bricked after FW Update

2019-03-04, 18:14 PM

Jim -

I too have never had issues with Lenovo Docks although this is the first batch of TB3 docks to order. Most of the other docks have been traditional style where the laptop sits on the station. Lenovo did give me one more request if the steps I mentioned prior to not work:

(tblshootng con't)Have you checked the BIOS setting under Config and Thunderbolt 3 dock.
Disable BIOS assist mode and see if that fixes the problem.

Again I have not tried these steps but choice to replace the docks since it does appear companywide. If i have more reported dock issues I may give this is whirl, but replacing seems to be the sure fire way to go.

Yes, the disabling of the BIOS Assist mode was the first step I took with the first TB3 Gen2 I used. This seems to be a very common fix, although it seems to disable intended security.

There are other companies selling Thunderbolt 3 doc's, and if you read in Readit and other forums, they are all experiencing similar issues. I never had a issue with my OneLink + dock. Actually, it's my all time favorite and wish I had a way to re-use it.

Re: Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - Bricked after FW Update

2019-03-04, 20:42 PM

I was able to recover my Thunderbolt Workstation dock after it fell into the 'bricked' state with the white LED.  I opened a warranty case but they just wanted to replace it(why?) and they are supposedly back-ordered, so I gave it a try.

I downloaded the 3.1.53 firmware zip from the Lenovo website. Disconnected the dock cable.  Unplugged the 230W cable from the dock and connected it to my P72.  Plugged a Thunderbolt 3 cable from the port used by the dock on the P72 to the FRONT TB port on the dock.  The rear TB port usually used by the dock cable does not work for this.

When I unzipped the firmware, it has a very long file name in it which is not handled by Windows unless you unzip to a short path(I used C:/dock ) or you use another tool like 7-zip.

Under the TBT folder, run FwUpdateTool and when it asks for firmware use the long filename in the same folder "Lenovo_dock_TR_EP_4C_rev37....bin".  This will update the thunderbolt firmware.

Once complete, watchout for a Windows notification asking whether to allow the new Thunderbolt device, I answered always allow/trust.

Now, you should be able to run the main firmware updater exe in the root of the firmware zip package "Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock Gen2....exe".  When I ran it, it showed the "Current Version=<unknown>", so it really seemed to be bricked but it ran the updater.

After this updater, i switched to the normal cable and replaced all cables to the dock.  Everything works again, hope this helps someone.

Im actually suprised to find this dock gets updates from Vantage, the new ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Workstation Dock  doesnt, even though it has updates/drivers on its download page. Does it only get updates if their critical or does lenovo vantage offer up all updates/drivers for it?

I sent your reponse the the Lenovo tech - they want to confirm you are installing the correct drivers/firmware....I'm sure you are but can you confirm? Here is the exact message:

Here is a link for the firmware including the Audio Chipset Firmware and the Driver for WIN 10:
https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/monitors-and-projectors/docks/thunderbolt-3-workstation-dock/40an/40an0230us/zjz00phx?linkTrack=Homepage%3ABody_Search%20Products&searchType=6&keyWordSearch=ZJZ00PHX
Is this the file you are downloading? I have placed a request for a SWAT box. If you can get it working we can always cancel that request.

Re: Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock - Bricked after FW Update

The procedure I posted above was on my TB3 workstation dock, not the regular TB3 dock.  And my workstation dock was bricked after working for months, so it must get updates from Vantage.  I beleive I have seen dock updates pop up on Vantage.

Also, I should point out that my workstation dock was not just spontaneously bricked while plugged in.  It got bricked when one morning I unplugged/replugged the AC power to the dock(usually it is always on).  The PC was not plugged in.

So maybe the dock saves the new firmware and applies it whenever it boots up?  I know the MS Surface docks do something like this.

Correct TB3 workstation dock (black square, red bottom) was the dock expieriencing the firmware issues specifically to Lenovo Vantage app (not lenovo update 5). If automatic updates was turned on and applied then this would have led to the bricked dock.
